I root for Costanzo, but I have a feeling his percieved value will never be higher in his career than this offseason..... I like this trade....

Goodbye Geary....

I will miss that little speedster though... Hopefully Lidge can K just as many people as last year and keep the ball down.... Myers back to the rotation is the greatest thing I'll hear this offseason....

I am mixed on this trade. The fact that they did not give up a lot and they can move Myers back to the rotation is great. I don't want Lidge closing games though. I think they should still go out and get Cordero. I would feel much better with Lidge setting up Cordero than just about anyone else setting up and Lidge closing. If they could do that and then resign Rowand I would be happy.

In either scenario there will be 1-2 more bullpen acquisitions.

Depending on what Baltimore wants for Tejada, that's probably the option I'd choose. He's younger than Lowell and I think a move to a contender would revitalize his bat, and his righty power would be a huge asset in the Phils' lineup.

I doubt there's enough left to trade for Tejada, but maybe the O'd would be willing to pull an Abreu, just to dump salary. My guess is that the Phils won't want to trade anything of whatever they've got left to trade unless it's for more pitching. The good news is that there's enough room in the payroll (assuming it's going to ~$105MM) to re-sign Romero, sign Geoff Jenkins for ~$5MM and still have enough left to re-sign Lohse, if they want.

Rumor on the other board is that Mora is the one the Phils want to play third and he has said he would waive his NTC to come here.

Yeah, I just saw that. Not a big Mora fan. He's cheaper than Miggy, but also four years older and doesn't have as much power. I can't remember offhand if his defense is much good.

In '03-'04 Mora was one of the better unsung hitters in the game. His '05 was pretty good, too. But, the last two years he's really tailed off. His OPS+ has been below league average at 91 and 98 (Greg Dobbs was 96 this year). His fielding at 3B has generally been very good, although he had an inexplicably bad year defensively in '06.

He's definitely a player on the decline who will be 36 when the '08 season starts, with a salary of over $8MM for '08 (and another in '09). To trade anything of value for him and/or to expect him to be anything better than league average would be a big mistake.

I'd like to extend him for another year or two, but Gillick doesn't seem like that type of dealer. He likes trading guys for 1 year then throwing them to the wolves.

Awesome trade as long as he's healthy.

From the Article: “Bruntlett, the other player acquired by the Phillies, will take over the utility infielder's spot vacated by Abraham Nuñez.” That is a 1:1 in hitting skills and fielding department. Maybe we can find a new home for Bruntlett.

From Bleh: “We just have to hope Eaton will be bad instead of terrible.” Thanks for the laugh.

I like Geary, but he is not a special talent. He did his job most of the time and is a quality person. I wish him luck

Bourn was just canned speed to me. I think he was a slightly better than average fielder, a pretty poor hitter, and does not have a sense of what is going on when he is on the base paths. I think a lot of this is that he is young and green. I hope he goes on and has a better career then I expect that he will. I am always happy to eats some crow if a player becomes more then they appear. For now however, I do not think we really gave up much.

I like Myers in the rotation more then in the pen, Lidge give up some shots and walks, but I watched plenty of games where Myers did both. I hope that the numbers (yes I did check the numbers) are only part of the story. If not and Lidge falters, then Myers is ready to go back to closing. The team can, I hope, move Eaton from long relief, to rotation as the #5 (I hope because I do not want him in the rotation).

Costanzo is the great unknown, but we all know that minor leaguers are a complete gamble anyway. Clearly management need to now do something to firm up the hot corner. I like this move as it forces some action.

I like the deal. CF with no power and possible on base skills, fungible level middle reliever who was about to get expensive and a 3B prospect who couldn't play 3b and couldn't hit AA LHP for a closer with a good history save 1 year and a month and a cheap utility guy with decent on base skills and it moves Myers back to the rotation.

This is probably the cheapest way to fix the rotation as well as the most effective.

Another way to put this trade into perspective: If the Astros had simply moved Bruntlett to CF and had him lead off they would likely have gotten about the same production, both offensively and defensively, as they'll get from Bourn.
