Election Day Thread

If McCain wins, it won't be because we stole the election, it will be because I am wearing my lucky We Are Georgetown t-shirt to work.

There are a lot of very motivated dem voters, so I expect them to vote early. The pudding's proof will come as the republicans wander in throughout the day. I do think there will be funny business (I doubt all the false voter fraud stuff was the only GOP trick up their sleeve), but it will be next to impossible for them to overcome the tidal wave.... I hope.

Voted today in Southern NJ and there was zero wait. In and out, my Presidential vote was pretty meaningless in NJ with the silly electoral college.

i am betting this election features the ever-ominous "missing box of votes found after election day" subplot. that was fun in washington state in 04, why not work it in there again?

Shut up, everyone knows only Rove steals elections. Except for JFK 50 years ago.

Popular vote does matter. If Obama beats Bush's 2004 percentage of the popular vote, that would be important.

You can say that the popular vote means something but will anyone even remember that when the taxes really don't get cut? I am saying that NJ is already determined to be Obama so my McCain vote was meaningless. It shouldn't be that way. Every vote should count equally.

Except JFK didn't steal that election. His father and the Chicago mob probably were up to some shenanigans that delivered Illinois to Kennedy, but he would have won the electoral college without Illinois. And that's the only example Republicans ever cite, other than those that think voter-registration drives are cheating.

Democrats focus on enrolling voters and getting them out to vote. For better or worse, it's their strategy - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But Democrats, generally speaking, don't try to suppress the vote or steal elections. We generally figure if there's a good turnout and every vote gets counted, we'll win our share.

Polls open at 7 am in Maryland, which I hate. I'm used to 6 am in Virginia, which gives people who want to beat the crowds a chance. I got to my polling place around 7:10 and it took about an hour, but it was well-run and orderly. I didn't hear a single raised voice the entire time.

Votes were recorded on a Diebold machine, so, to say the least, after I voted for president, I scrolled back a page to make sure my vote was recorded. I'll give Diebold this - at the end of your voting, it shows you a screen summarizing all your selections. I just hope they're recorded that way.

Well, I do think the electoral college should be abolished, if that's what you're getting at. Why should 8 states get to choose the President for the other 42? And why should Delaware have 3 electoral votes?

And, I think there are too many polls.

That is what I am getting at. The electoral college had its time and place, but its course has been run and should be gone. I can't imagine what would happen tonight and tomorrow in this country if Obama wins the popular vote, but somehow loses the election. Batten down the hatches everyone.

Oh, I'm sorry. And here I thought that box of nearly lost ballots that delivered a victory to the Democrats was probably an example of Republicans having hid those ballots. Or maybe it was a genuine accident. Either way, not an example of Democratic election-stealing.

I forgot about the vaunted King County GOP machine's notorious election stealing apparatus. I mean, Bush won just about 1/3 of the vote there!

They had three recounts. Each time they found a couple hundred more votes for Gregoire in King County. Rossi was ahead for like a month after the election. None of the other counties in the state had such big swings. They discovered 700+ absentee ballots in King County in the middle of December :!: , and decided to count them by a 2-1 vote. Gregoire ended up winning by 129 votes.

especially since Bush and the GOP thought his % gave him a mandate and lots of political capital to spend.
