This is a fairly stunning reaction from Alex Castellanos, one of the more hardcore right-wing, let's say tacticians:

Whaaa?

I assume this is the beyond-recognition booze talking, or you're joking. But that hurts a little. "Left-wing O'Reilly"? I don't think either half of that describes me very well.

I was joking. You are actually one person that makes me think even when I am drunk.

I think I sometimes bring your talking points up in family conversation and use them as my own.

You are always gold in my book.

As most of you know by now, I'm for systemic change -- not "change" as a marketing slogan. I'm for a new Constitutional Congress, fix some stuff up. I'm far more left than the DNC or current Dem machine -- and I don't think Obama is a visionary -- but I will say that he accomplished a lot of his mission tonight. He generated some excitement -- he called out Bush 8 years and McCain. He got somewhat specific, and his best line was that it's not about me its about you. It wasn't perfect, as one pundit remarked he's made more eloquent and erudite speeches, but he got down to a real level, he personalized himself and did not in any way come off as some ivy league. He got the point to some people, that the real elite is the guy who has been doing it for all these years, with so many homes he can't keep count. Experience or is it really being a Washington insider.

I'd also say the Dems and the event at the stadium came off more polished for once. It wasn't quite Dems as-usual. He helped himself tonight in what will still be a close race, and I'm still sure there will be some Republican cheating, so I htink he needs to win by more than 50.7 to 49.3 plus pop vote doesn't count really anyway...

Debates will be interesting and McCain and his camp have a week to come with their comeback. They will get on that business about the cave, probably not the best move when you don't have military background the other guy is a former pow, that one wlll come back to bite him. I don't like it when Dems try to act tougher than Repubs, never gone win that one.

Obama did what he needed to do. He threw the Reps for a loop and the pundits were favorable, only the Ben Stein's of the world who can't be taken seriously tried to pooh pooh it.

I wish it meant more than it does, and that if he wins, more of the "changes" I'm looking for would be implemented (repeal the Patriot Act, close down Gitmo, shrink Homeland Security, stop the no-fly lists, go after monopolies, polluters and union-busting -- and really come up with a viable quality single-payer health care system ) but maybe he can do some good and get us out of this dark period in national history.

PS

I don't get the whole "experience" slogan anway. W had no national experience, and it showed! He manufactured a boon-doggle of a war for no reason. It's not about experience, it's about ability and sense. If I were the Dems I take control of this bit. Hilary tried to use it too. Need to come with better comebacks. I suspect Obama and Biden will prevail in the debates if not dominate, but it may not matter...

I enjoyed this random reference in an editorial in yesterday's Philadelphia Inquirer about John McCain mentioning his POW experience during his recent appearance on the Tonight Show,

(By the way, this was the celebrity politician's 13th appearance on Leno, pulling him even with Jennifer Love Hewitt.)

Both Kristol and Castellanos spoke glowingly of the speech? Why does that make me nervous?

Not Pawlenty.

Crap.

Palin would be a pretty cool pick I think though, if Drudge is right.

I would like to see the headline "Is America Ready For Its First MILF VP?" somewhere today if it's her.

A year and a half into the campaign and he mentions being a POW once every month or two. What's next? Barack Obama talking about his uncle liberating a concentration camp or shamelessly putting his kids on another magazine cover?

Mitt says it's not him either.

Since I don't watch pundits (because in my opinion they're the politics equivalent of Cataldi) is anyone getting on McCain for the appearance of confusion here, with likely candidates saying "not me, not me, not me"?

I guess. It doesn't look like it's going to be Lieberman.

It could be someone completely random.

It's kinda cool that it hasn't leaked yet. Apparently one of the people in my department's roommate is the As yet to be named VP's traveling press secretary. She is on the ground in Dayton, and she has no idea who it is.
