Great speech, though Lil' vulture didn't quite make it through. Dajafi, what's wrong with the c-span feed? At least you don't have to listen to morons on that thing.

The fact that I watched the speech instead of the evident fuck-tardery of the Phillies game is an added bonus.

I think jerseyhoya would agree that speech was better than watching madson(?) give up a grand slam.

Laex, I'm not too sure.

I would have enjoyed getting mad at Obama. Getting mad at the Phillies isn't nearly as fun.

Also, I almost broke my Giants Super Bowl Champions pint tonight in anger. Not good.

So I didn't watch the speech, but Bill Kristol just said that Obama surpassed all possible expectations. So I would imagine it was pretty good.

I thought it was very good. However, David Brooks found it "emotionally diffident" and too long. To which I would, no, the 8th inning was too long.

I actually think it was the kind of speech that established the foundation of the campaign--it's what Obama is about, and I expect that the campaign will refer to the themes raised tonight again and again.

I had the Phils on mute on our second TV. after the abysmal start to the 8th I got so mad I could not concentrate on Obama's speech which we were watching on the main TV.

The parts I listened to were pretty awesome though.

I thought it was strong.

The reason I liked Obama from the jump--well, one reason--was that I thought he might have that gift that Lincoln and FDR had: a sense of where the country is, a vision of where he wants to take it, and a fairly clear idea of how to get it there. Tonight he laid out a pretty blistering critique of the last eight years... but he didn't get overwrought and crazy about it the way that (for instance) I sometimes do. Nobody was evil; nobody was twisted or un-American. They were, and are, simply wrong.

What I'd read about the speech had me worried that he might go too far with the wonky specifics. He didn't do that--it didn't drag--but he hit his points: changes to the tax code that will mean lower taxes for the vast majority of Americans, a focus on investments and getting markets to work as they should, for the benefit of all, rather than for those who can afford to game them. A foreign policy approach that sees violence as just one tool in the toolbox, and understands that while there are times when war is unavoidable, it's not something to be wished for. And a sense that our strength, ultimately, rests in our values and ideals and aspirations, not our wealth or force.

No idea how it will play. But I thought it was good, and I'm deeply glad that the sappy movie my wife was watching ended soon enough that I saw it on our TV rather than alongside what turned into a fucking nightmare with the Phillies.

i found it to be a speech of fairly typical grousing by a party not currently in the white house. virtually all of the country's ills are the fault of 1-3 people. the line about "mccain says he'd follow obama to the gates of hell but not into a cave" or whatever was startlingly stupid. what exactly has mr. state senator ever done, ever?

when has he demonstrated the ability to work with both sides of the aisle? why didn't anyone during the entire convention give any examples of him doing this? (because there aren't any?) is he magically going to start doing this once we elect him because he says can? this was not a speech that made me think this guy's going to unite anything. he'll pursue an agenda, just like any other candidate. which is fine - it's what you'd expect on behalf of his party. but don't act like you're above it all when you're just playing the game the same way, with a nice face on everything.

we've watched him be made into some sort of Great Facilitator night after night, story after story, based really nothing more than his own words. at some point, someone's got to ask for a resume before we give him the job.

the other things i learned tonite were:
1. the C in MSNBC must stand for "clowns"
2. government can do anything

i don't get this guy. i get a bad feeling that too many people are on board because they "want to be part of history" not because of what he's done or he'll do.

Ba ha haa, ABC's Terry Moran

The democratic party gave their presidential nomination, and it seemed, their heart and soul, and the muscle and bone and sinew of their political organization to Barak Obama, the son of a black man from Kenya and a white man from Kansas.

Now no matter what your politics, that is a moment for the history books.

The son of two men? Now that is historic!
