I have never heard her speak. She has no national politics experience, but she does have executive experience. She’s gonna need to prove herself over the next couple of months. I don’t think McCain would have picked someone who is a lightweight. We’ll see how this goes, but I think overall this is an exciting and solid pick, but it definitely has backfire potential.

The theory is that she's young, hot, and can possibly steal votes from Hillary supporters. At least that's my cynical marketing take.

Who's theory? Hugh Hefner?

So, this will probably get lost in the banter over Palin's shaggability (solid 8), but I was messing around with the numbers from 538 this morning. These are taken from the "PROJECTION" estimates given for each state, as of today. This is more a record for me because I want to see how the polls move. I simply put the numbers into EXCEL, along with the margin of error, and then divided the states into 3 groups; outside the MOE for McCain, outside the MOE for Obama, and within the MOE

I saw that they were talking about that on MSNBC. It is a seriously legitimate question.

She was on the Wasilla city council for 4 years, became Mayor, and just was eleceted governor in 06.

She has more practical experience than they guy at the top of the Democratic ticket.

Seems to me her experience isn't that much different than Obama's, and he's going for the top job. The tickets are negative images of each other (experience/inexperience vs inexperience/experience).

Crazy-like-a-fox pick. It'll fire up Republicans (and not just for onanism purposes) and generate huge buzz.

It undercuts his whole "Is Obama Ready" shtick somewhat, but I'm never sure whether real people buy into that stuff or if it's just supposed to do for Wolf Blitzer what Palin evidently does for uncle milt.

Also, the thing I wrote about Biden possibly doing something obnoxious and awful debating a woman goes double for debating a somewhat hot woman.

she's got a great personal story, with herself, her family, and her election to the state capitol. real middle american type stuff, which is of course ironic being where she's from. she's got a bit of an accent when she talks, which means she'll get made fun of on the daily show. she's have to get prepared real fast, so that's really the most important thing. biden's kind of a jerk sometimes (like his good pal mccain), so we'll see how she handles all of that.

that's one way to cut into the post-convention bump, i guess.

I don't know if that is true. Obama was a state senator for 7 years which trumps her city council/mayoral experience. He doesn't have a ton more experience but it is there.

The counter argument is that the majority of her experience is executive, while Obama's isn't. To me it's a wash.

In terms of what's relevant to the presidency, I'd take working on non-nuclear proliferation issues over managing the budget of a 5,000-person town. But hey, that's me.

I'd rather have someone who can manage people and a budget, deal with the elimination of earmarks, and show the willingness to go after her own party, vs serving on a committee that talks about nuclear proliferation.

To be fair, that non-nuclear proliferation work was a softball that enjoyed obvious bipartisan support. It didn't take any leadership or political acumen to accomplish.

The same can't be said for Palin's work, even in the brief two years she's been in the Governor's office.

The Illinois state senate meets for six months a year, while being a mayor is a 12 month a year job, but no I don't think she's ready to be President. Too inexperienced. If it were a choice between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin right now for President, I'd vote Biden. But they're not running for President. I hope that if she does ever become President it's after being VP for at least two years.

I am curious why Palin would accept this position. Is this something that, if they lose, will kill her political career? She is considered as one of the rising stars in the party and I think should have first asserted herself on a national level like Congress before taking on this.

She'll still be governor, win or lose. This raises her profile by a factor of 100.
