Interesting read on her (and Jim Bowden throws her under the bus at the end):

Good read. Sounds like Bowden wants to still be a gm.

ESPN analyst and former Cincinnati Reds GM Jim Bowden doesn't think gender is the issue. "I worked for Marge Schott, who was a female owner," he says. "People are people.''

is that supposed to mean something?

I think it's time. I think the Phillies need to hire Kim Ng.

I wasn't too sure about her yesterday but I did some research on her and she's been involved (and seems to have done well) in almost every aspect of baseball operations.

I say bring her in.

Pass on Ng.

But also pass on every re-tread (Bowden, etc).

We've got experience all over the front office - bring in fresh blood, with a solid grasp of analytics, and an appreciation for scouting. Someone who's been working the last several years for a team, and has a handful of under-appreciated prospects on their radar.

I hope Ng gets a job, and I hope it works out. But I'm not ready to be the test tube for that experiment. Let a smaller market take a chance. We're a big dog.

Yeh, the more I read about her, the more comfortable I am. I didn't like hiring someone from the league office, but she really has had her hands in every aspect of the game and has succeeded at everything she's done. Hard to say she wouldn't succeed as a GM when she's been successful at everything else.

Make it so.

I agree with shore. Whatever her qualifications the dynamic between her and others (especially other GM's) is an unknown in an old boy's network. I like the idea and I wish her well but I'm not interested in being the pioneer with arrows in my back.

I don't think there's any more danger than when she was hired at any of her other positions. She's succeeded, with flying colors, at every position she's had. I'm not sure what's magical about the GM position that would suddenly turn her incompetent and turn out everyone else against her.

Here's an example of interactions between one old school baseball guy and her. I remember reading about this weird harassment incident years ago, but I can't find any links to original source material anymore. No idea if this is how others feel 12 years later at all.

Keeping it an old boys network because they may not react well to it is a pretty lame reason. She's not an experiment, she's a candidate.

Agreed. But thirding Shore and JFL, the Phillies have to act only in the strict best interest of the franchise. And if one of the qualities that they value in a GM is his or her ability to negotiate and ably maneuver within the small network of other GMs around both leagues, then it's a meaningful consideration for them to have regarding whether Ng could do so. Now in all likelihood she's had such vast experience in the league in multiple capacities that she can do that. And if they hire her then it will be demonstrable right away that there are no gender hangups and business will conduct as it should. But even with that said, I'm not rooting for the Phillies to be progressive, just to win. If they can kill two birds with one stone that's super fantastic. However between the stench of the league offices and the sheer fact that she's been a candidate for so long and not gotten a position, I can't imagine why anyone looks at her as a slam dunk good hire.

There's really no way to know unless and until it actually happens but human nature being what it is and MLB being what it is, I think it's likely there will be some unfavorable dynamics, even if only subconscious or pre-conscious. I suppose you could point to Jackie Robinson as an instance where taking the risk worked out well for a team despite outright racism and discrimination, but I'm not sure how analogous this situation is. Is Ng to women in the front office akin to Robinson on the field? Is she the right mix not just to break the barrier, but to excel?

Right. On her evaluative rubric it's an unchecked box- an unknown. I'm sure on a guy like Larry Beinfest you can check that box but he'll have other weaknesses to consider. It's all part of evaluating people as candidates. Frankly it's one of the problems I had with Ruben. His attitude at times seemed unnecessarily confrontational compared to other GMs and my impression was that the general reaction when they'd meet with him or take his calls was likely to be some variation of "this fuckin guy... (jerk off motion)". So just from that perspective I'm gunshy to take a chance on someone who might continue that lineage of "unfavorable dynamics"

I am pulling for Ng, because the Phillies busting the glass ceiling and hiring a woman to be GM might just be enough to get my wife to become a Phillies fan too, which would then make my life easier in more ways than I can count (she is currently indifferent-to-hostile toward baseball and all sports).

Regarding her resume, I think ng would make an excellent candidate for president. I would love to bring her aboard here in some capacity, but I'm not quite ready to endorse her for gm.
