The future is Nola-nger so far away: Phillies thoughts

Kim Ng has been very highly regarded for a long time and has the type of background that they seem to be looking for in a GM. I'd be way on board with it if they hired her.

It's weird... I actually expect the Phils to make a good decision here. This is the first offseason in a while when that has been the case.

That was a mirage, given the horrendous output of the farm from then to now and the reduction of free agency value. The bigger problem to me was sentimentality and closed-mindedness, which Ng certainly doesn't seem to represent.

It's Ing, but no one will correct you if you say Eng. accents around here screw up vowels all the time

It's ing in the same way Hyundai is hunday

Are you enging me on? i'm just going by what the person I interacted with said whose last name was Ng

"Ng" is a Romanization of a buncha different words in different languages (Cantonese, Hokkien (what my wife calls "Taiwanese"), etc.). Words that mean different things (even in the same language/dialect). There is no one way of correctly pronouncing it in English.

Then can we all agree on a pronunciation.

I say Eng. Ing and Uhng don't flow as well.

Most of my friends with that name pronounce it (I)ng. Some pronounce it (E)ng. I have friends who actually spell the name Eng, but I don't know anyone who spells it Ing. Like PiP said, its the anglicization of a word in a different language that doesn't use the same alphabet, so pronunciations vary.

She herself pronounces it ANG, btw. http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/la/co ... es/ng.html

atkins is an interesting name i haven't heard before. i think the ideal hire would be someone who has the analytics slant and worked in player development. ray montgomery or tyrone brooks would also fit that bill. seems like they are looking at everyone if they interviewed beinfest.

This is how I see it.

As for Ng, I don't think she would rank high on my list if not for her unusual demographics. I also wouldn't want them to hire someone who has been at the league office. So I'm going to say pass on her, though it would obviously be a cool hire for a number of reasons.

I'm not sure I know enough youngish GM types in other orgs who have their hands in player development and believe strongly in analytics. But I'm hoping for someone like that.

i hear you and think this is very legit especially with macphail's situation too but i would be excited even if she ends up not being very good because it signals that this isn't your daddy's phillies anymore.

I don't see what's so cool about her other than that she's a woman, but that's fine. There are probably 20 other people that are "qualified." I have no opinion about any of those other people though. So bring her on. I am slightly worried about the fact that MacPhail was freaking out during his press conference about "how much baseball has changed" in the last 4 years and we'd be hiring someone that hasn't been running a team lately. Still, it's baseball not rocket science, if she's as smart as they say i'm sure she'll figure it out.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

I think she's cool for a few reasons. One is that she was my pick to replace Amaro for quite a while. Another is none of us are all that clear regarding everything a GM does and what makes a good GM. There are candidates all over the place. No one here is really all that familiar with any of them. You really can't tell much until they actually get in the position.

For example, Jack Z. In Seattle was hailed as a great pick. He had, not a computer guy, but an entire team when he took over. He has been a disaster.

Ng has a Lot of great experience. How good is she at running the show? No one knows. But I like what I do know about her.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

I think the fact that she has as a woman been able to do what she has accomplished rising to the kind of power she has ESPECIALLY in baseball probably speaks to her qualifications. She definitely wasn't given free goodwill and acceptance without gaining a lot of respect along the way. Her resume is incredible.

One advantage of hiring her is she can sign off on deals very quickly. Unless she's a Kimberly.
