As a GM for the Mariners I would look for a manager with presence, someone that will be a leader and a veteran catcher, like Carlos Ruiz

Chooch would hit about .160 as a 37-year-old in Safeco.

I was going to make some stupid joke about him fitting right in with the rest of the lineup, but I see the five guys that have played catcher for them this year are hitting .175, .160, .126, .071 and .000. for a grand total of .159.

so, yeah.

I would love to see Herrera get some reps at second. Supposedly the best defensive 2nd baseman in the Texas league. His bat would play very well there in the future.

Looks like Sweeney is going to get most of the time there

Update on Cesar: he has ligament damage that requires surgery, but he should be ready for spring training

thoughts closely relevant to the thread title....
an all replacement team is supposed to win a bit under 48 games, so you need about 33 war to get to .500 and about 40 to make the postseason.

the 2015 mlb phils still young enough to be in or nearing their primes in 2017 are:
herrera, franco, rupp, cesar, altherr, galvis, sweeney, asche, giles, araujo, nola, morgan, asher, s.gonzalez, ogando, murray, and neris. if you toss out the big negative value guys (asche, asher, gonzalez) on the assumption that the new farm depth means they'll be gone soon if they continue to suck, you are left with 14 guys.

those 14 have totaled just over 14 bwar so far in 2015 (before last night), and only galvis has been a full-timer all season. that's pretty much all of the phils positive value outside that contributed by the guys who left via trade. an all replacement team is supposed to win a bit under 48 games, so you need about 33 war to get to .500 and about 40 to make the postseason.

if... the current crop of 14 decent-to-good young mlb phils just match their 2015 production in 2017 (regression/injury by some cancels out any improvement with age or increase in playing time by others)...
then...
the best 2015 aa prospects (thompson, eflin, lively, cordero, windle, crawford, williams, alfaro, knapp, cozens, quinn) only need to have 2017 rookie/sophomore seasons a little better than the generation ahead of them to get the phils to break-even.

that's pretty encouraging, given how much better (or at a higher level) the current aa bunch is performing now than the current mlb youngsters were a couple of years before they reached the majors.

Francouer is one of the only veterans on the team. And even though he has played for the Phillies for just one season, he defended his teammates.

"I haven't heard exactly what he said to make enough of a comment, except that I completely disagree with that," he said. "If you're in here, you see guys working. To say guys don't post or know how to win around here, I mean, I came here as a visiting player for a lot of years and they beat us just fine. That wasn't the right statement."

Papelbon is prone to saying controversial things, whether or not they are based in reality.

"I'm sure he's frustrated where they're at," Francoeur said. "He got traded from here and we've had more save opportunities here for Kenny [Giles] now, you know? Like I said, I'm sure he's frustrated that he got traded over there and they're not going to probably go to the playoffs. So he's upset. But I mean, the city gave him a great contract and gave him a lot of money. That's his business what he wants to say, but I think you ask any guy in here with this organization they know how to win. It's just a tough time right now."

Francoeur will be thirty-two next season. To have a vet like him around next year has merit. He's been a solid reserve with a good attitude and could continue in that role for a year or two. He still has some on the field skills.

He's one of the worst-hitting outfielders in the major leagues, who had ~200 very good PA over a 3 month stretch this year. Good guy, terrible hitter. Banking on anything like those 200 PAs, instead of the 1,000 prior, seem nuts for a 32-year-old. Without that stretch, he's probably the worst hitter in the majors over the last 4 years.

you have a real nut on for hating on Francoeur. he's a backup who's done well for this team.

i think it is likely that papelbon is just pretty dumb and can't differentiate between a lack of talent during a rebuild and wanting to win.
