Phillies Thoughts: Randomness is Our Best Hope

Yeah, sorry, I wasn't disagreeing. We should go after Bogaerts and Betts because of their talent, not because they meet a positional need. I don't think we should avoid Bogaerts because he and Crawford play SS, say. (No one is saying that, which is why I'm saying I am not disagreeing)

One thing that's become clear over the last few years is that although teams are running out of their shoes to lock up young hitting talent, they are much more cautions in giving long-term deals to arb-eligible pitchers. Accordingly, there is a significantly higher availability of high-end SP talent on the market (both FA and trades)than there is hitting talent. Scherzer, Lester, Samardjzia, Hamels, Gee, Santana, etc.

Which, if you're a high payroll team like the Phillies, means (1) you shouldn't trade your assets for young pitching since it can be bought every year with the only advantage you have (money); (2) you should trade anything you can for young hitting; and (3) Hamels value is probably less than we think it should be. Basically, I'm 100% opposed to any pitcher-led deal for Hamels.

yup. And this is amplified with offense being a scarcity.

That's one thing. The other is that we have anything of value to give TB. We don't unless its something like Hamels and we pay his entire salary for Myers, which would be stupid.

Add the #SFGiants to the list of teams interested in Cole Hamels, sources say. So all 3 teams that lost out on Lester - SF, Bos, LA - are in

man fuck that. we should get at least 2 if not 3 of those guys. meanwhile, red sox boards everywhere are unbearable right now with all the "we're gonna swindle RAJ, just wait" posts

Eh, I don't think that can happen. But I wouldn't do a deal with Boston without getting either Betts or Boegarts.

I doubt they would deal either one since they're both expected to be in Boston's everyday lineup this year.

We can't have too much middle IF talent. SS can always be moved to 2B.

We have so many long-term needs as an organization that we should be position agnostic.

Betts' primary position is as a middle INF.

(Mookie was moved to the OF last year)

Trivia night = poor phone posts. I forgot that dick was our coach. Not an out couch. That sounds bad though so I'm fine calling Ryne an out couch.

It's like an out house, but with no privacy.

Only because he was blocked by Pedroia. I'm sure he hasn't forgotten how to play 2B. :-D

Catchers don't get hurt any more than pitchers do, and hitting on one could greatly expedite our rebuild. But I don't know enough about Swihart or Boston's true intentions to have an opinion

Their #2 ranked prospect. 22 yo switch hitter, good swing mechanics from both sides (fluid, quick hands), plus power. Strong accurate arm. Projects as an all-star catcher. Don't know much about Vazquez, just that he's ranked around 10 or 11 and is a decent hitter a little light on power and defense.

Scouts also cited him as a two-way threat with elite makeup and fluid actions. But I can tolerate that if he plays well

All of a sudden, dominos start to fall and we start hearing whispers on Byrd, Rollins, and Hamels

I'm just utterly stunned there's been NOTHING on Papelbon, considering he looks practically like a bargain in this market. Fair value, at least.

Maybe they're waiting until July. If he pitches poorly or gets hurt, the 2016 option won't vest. If he pitches well, his value goes up
