The Red Sox and Phillies have had discussions this offseason about a deal that would send left-hander Antonio Bastardo to Boston in exchange for a package involving infield prospect Sean Coyle, according to a major-league source with knowledge of the situation. It is unclear if those talks are still progressing, though the teams are known to be in contact due to Boston's continued interest in both Bastardo and Cole Hamels.

connecting the dots

Hamels, Bastardo, Ruiz

for

Betts, Owens, Vasquez(the non Swihart catcher), and Eduardo Rodriguez

Fair for both sides?

I wish the Sox would do that deal, but I doubt it.

The Sox are interested in Ruiz? I thought it was the Dodgers that were interested in a catcher.

it actually makes a lot of sense for both sides. they trade a mid-tier prospect who is stuck behind a couple of guys in their system for an obvious need at the major league level.

I think it would be hilarious if Ruben came home while making zero deals.

i think its probably likely he makes no deals.

Then tells us groundwork was laid for moves to be made and season doesnt start til April. maybe throw in a we arent going to make a trade just to trade.

Might even get a " if everyone plays a little better this is a team that contend for the division."

Major league source insists that the Phillies are not active in trying to move Hamels [to Boston].

We'll get a skinny catcher and a sore armed reliefer.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can
