I'm not feeling great about the potential trade partners being Theo Epstein/Jed Hower, Andrew Friedman/Zaidi and Ben Cherington.

Yeah, no doubt smarter people running Cubs, Red Sox and now Dodgers. I really wonder if Padres might be a dark horse especially if we throw some money their way. New GM, home town player and some solid prospects. I'd trade Hamels for a package something like Austin Hedges (best defensive catcher in minor leagues), Max Fried (young LHP that will miss half of 2015 with TJ) and one of their power hitting outfield prospects Hunter Renfroe or Rymer Liriano.

Yeah. He went from the Wilmington News Journal to the Boston Globe. You would have, too.

Boston Herald, but still a career move I'd make.

Ahhh... my bad. Thanks for the correction. :)

@M_Montemurro: Amaro was asked if #Phillies are wanting too much for their players. "That's a bunch of malarkey. ... We've done more listening than asking"

I hate Ruben Amaro less now that he successfully used malarkey in an interview. More points if he uses poppycock next.

Gillick:

Ruben didn’t all of a sudden get dumb. People don’t want to hear this, but there were five years from 2007 to 2011 and the last year in 2011 we won 102 games. He didn’t all of a sudden get stupid the last three years. There were just a lot of factors to factor in there. And it isn’t what you’ve done in the past, it’s what are you doing for us now. And we haven’t done anything the last three years. But as far as him getting a brain cramp or something — it hasn’t happened. I have confidence in him. I’ve got his back.”

Philadelphia's preference for toolsy high-upside prospects.

The Phils explanation for said preference: "Let's keep tryin' until it finally works out!"

Of course he didn't. You can't fall out of a basement window.

I do feel like we've stopped doing this. I think we''re in a new era of vastly different mistakes and miscalculations.

I'd be curious to hear the question that prompted this response. "Pat, Ruben's got a bit of a reputation as a simpleton. Is he slowly getting dumber or did he reach a plateau of stupid years ago?"

Of course its not rueben's fault. The players just have to play better.

(tentative) conclusion [details moved to war wars thread]: the fangraphs crowd really is wrong in thinking hamels isn't as good as scherzer (or lester), because they are wrong in assuming hamels can't consistently get groundballs when he needs them, and because they continue to have a mysterious preference for fip over xfip that is inconsistent with the fact that they were one of the first to start listing xfip.

"Gillick was responding to a reporter’s question about whether Amaro, who is entering the final year of his contract in 2015, would survive the season. Why can Amaro survive? "Because I’ve got confidence in him"". Then the rest of it.
