I just heard this a few days ago. It was barely official earlier this week. Fwiw there is more to it. Family isn't the only reason or even the biggest.

In any event, I give up. There's not a single factual argument for playing Asche over Ruf. If you, Grote or anyone else wants to hope or believe Asche will be better than league average and is a better alternative than Ruf over the next 3 seasons, you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. "Hope" and "belief" aren't facts.

He, Thome and Burrell are the only reason the Phils have been scoring at all consistently this year. The Phils lost last night because they scored all of one unearned run. And Bell has shown -- despite the contempt thrown his way -- that he does have an ability to get a big hit in the clutch.
And, please don't give me the Utley scenario. Utley has done nothing against major league pitching to suggest his numbers would be anything more than Bell-like. Even if they were a bit better, playing Utley at 2B requires moving an excellent second baseman who hits well for his position to 3B, where his defense is about average and where his production is nothing special for a third baseman.
