Selected ninth in the first round in 2004. Man, other than Verlander, what crapshoot that first round was.

doubt a trade of cole will happen before the summer deadline.
the main consequence of boston having so obviously put themselves in a position to pay a prospect premium for an attractive way of solving their pitching and cespedes problem simultaneously is that it drives up the perceived prospect price for cole among the public, media, and upper management of the phils, and keeps amaro from getting ripped off in the proud phillies tradition of the rolen, schilling, and lee panic trades.

just about the only safe negotiating position for the combination of this organization and this pitcher is to consider a return of anything less than b or b + owens + cespedes unacceptable. it will take the luck of having another club panic before cole's value drops for that kind of offer to come in, but it would take even more luck for the phils to break even on a lesser trade.

I'm just not seeing that kind of deal from Boston's end. Maybe if Cole doesn't insist on the option year

i'm not seeing it either. but i prefer no deal to anything less. as long as such a deal from boston remains somewhat plausible, other teams will consider trying to match it. the more matching offers bantered about, the more that this becomes the universally perceived price for hamels, and the less likely the phils are to cave. that's the way i want it.

I'm with you on all of that, but like to think teams (especially Boston, Chicago, and LA) are more rational than that

RAJ's friends at Beerleaguer sponsor(s) this page.

BRef wanted $15 to sponsor this page, but in Ruben's honor I ponied up $75 on a three year deal with a vesting option. 2015 can't come soon enough!

Stark says the Yankees called about JRoll but the asking price was too high, so they moved on

More from Stark on JRoll/Yankees:

Heard from 2 more sources on Rollins-to-NYY report. #Phillies source said all #Yankees offered was a "utility player" & not close to enough
Both sources also said Rollins isn't interested in getting traded to #Yankees so it was a moot point to pursue this further.

...and Hamels:

Phillies source also disputed notion Phillies have asked clubs for their 2 or 3 best prospects for Hamels. They've told clubs to make offers
Source said only offer for Hamels came from club that has never been mentioned in media. Described offer as "good" but "not good enough"

It just shows he's not interested in rebuilding at all, just waiting for everyone to make him offers.

He knows he's on thin ice and he's afraid to make a move that doesn't actually get back anyone useful (again).

Roughly half the teams will make themselves better this off season, but Rube will say there wasn't any opportunities worth pursuing.

Thank god the Eagles are good. I haven't thought about the Phillies in months they have become completely irrelevant to me. Please go away Rube, I miss the Phils.

yeah this sucks. he needs to take the first made up trade offer in a stark article.

I don't think anyone said he should take the first offer, let alone the first made up offer. Rube is just full of excuses for why he is bad at his job. Nothing is his fault. Bottom line, if anyone else led a company or organization and took it from the very top to near the very bottom, they would be collecting unemployment. It bothers me that the Phils are too dumb or loyal to do what needs to be done.

I hate him too but it seems a little early to complain about not making any moves this offseason. The only one that matters is Hamels anyway.
