This error of omission, not signing someone we think is good value, is really low on the list of possible gm mistakes. How he manages the current assets in the organization is much more important to the franchise's future.

Yeah, well, he's doing a pretty good job of hitting the whole list.

There are very few opportunities to add players without giving up prospects or picks, especially with a player his age. It is now a lost opportunity. Rube is always full of excuses and nobody passes the buck more adeptly. He's earned my lack of trust with years of haplessness.

For several years, Amaro had talked about the team’s declining offense and the need for more production. The Phillies ranked in the bottom half of the NL in runs, home runs and other significant offensive categories in 2014. On Wednesday, Amaro disputed that he was looking for offense. He said pitching was the focus.

“Who said we were looking for a power bat? We have a long-term plan and the moves we make are based on that. We’re looking for pitching right now. Right now, we’re looking to improve our pitching. We need more pitching.”

Understandable when you consider how stocked we are with power-hitting prospects.

Rebuilding around a utility player /would/ be a unique strategy.

Why would we need power?

Freddy Galvis, who managed to crush 4 (four) homers in 2014, had only the 3rd highest total among our under-30 hitters. Ruf was 4th with 3, Revere 5th with 2. Cesar Hernandez and Reid Brignac each hit 1.

Our leaders - Cody Asche and Dom Brown - hit 10 each. So we got 31 homers from our under-30 hitters this year. Why spend $11M on a guy who (longshot, admittedly) might match that himself?

We really are the city's worst franchise. I would trade our major and minor league roster, and our front office, for the same of any other franchise in baseball.

Yup.

They have already admitted that they are not trying to win next year. If that's the case, then you don't go after pitching. Pitching is more erratic than hitting because of the major injury possibilities, etc. IMO, you should first go after offense. Once you have a good core and are ready to compete, then I'd go get whatever pitching is still needed. You're more likely to guess right on the pitching closer to the time they're needed.

Sadly, Jamie Moyer will not be returning to the booth in 2015. Wants to spend more time with his massive family.

Well, who knows how much to believe anything Amaro says, but what's bothersome about the quote to me is simply that they need help in all areas and to compartmentalize like that and say " now we're going after pitching, then we'll focus on hitting, and then we'll work on improving our clubhouse spread" or whatever is nonsensical, since you just have to jump on whatever opportunities are out there to improve the club, no matter when they come up. I can't even believe he actually thinks that way, but at the very least it's annoyingly nonsensical.
