I took it as Sandberg being down on Revere defensively in CF -- and/or the organization having a plan for CF -- but not phasing him out completely

FWIW, Deitch is pushing the idea of Beltran. Thinks Ruf would still end up playing a lot (eg, Mayberry has 66 starts so far)

Revere does take some interesting routes tracking down fly balls. Perhaps with time that can be corrected. however the biggest flaw in his game is that Revere can't throw. He has an arm that resembles Juan Pierre's. That puts him in LF and he doesn't have the power to hold that position. The way the organization is grooming Hernandez for CF, suggests that Revere is going to LF or will be traded away.

I think it's more a contingency if they come back with Revere in CF, sign a corner guy like Beltran, and cannot get an extra option year for Hernandez.

In that scenario, Hernandez/Ruf replaces Mayberry/Nix

Revere should be the 4th/5th OF. If you could get Beltran, I'm all for it. It may be the worst defensive OF but Ruf (LF), Dom (CF) & Beltran (RF) helps to solve some offensive woes and balances the R/L in the lineup. When a lefty pitches, put Ruf at 1B for Howard and let Mayberry (or another RH bat) get playing time in the OF.

why is beltran coming here. unless we add an extra year in addition to whatever the multiple contenders that will want him are offering

I keep reading names like Choo, McCann, etc on this board today. Let's just fill the entire line-up with all lefties. That should turn things around.

taking salaries out of the equation, would you rather have choo and mccann in the lineup today or not?

career vs. lefties:

Utley - 1752 pa, .266/.374/.472 125 wRC+
McCann - 1279 pa, .259/.319/.427 99 wRC+

choo is really bad against lhp (62), but fucking mashes rhp (184). if pressed, i probably take that trade off.
brown is at an 80 wRC+ against lhp with a little over 200 career abs.
howard should sit against lhp in favor of ruf.

i just want guys who are good at baseball and i think you can make a lineup work with a bunch of lefties. mccann is going to get games off anyway, might as well be against lhp.

It's not that guys like Utley or McCann can't hit LHP. It's that they're less effective against LHP, so your key hitters will always be facing LHP in high leverage situations and, therefore, their performance in those situations will be less.

even their less effective adds up to really good in utley's case and average in mccann's. if teams in our division want to load up on loogy's as a response, i can live with that.

but what if you were ruthless about subbing out some of those key and not so key hitters. What if Mayberry always batted for Howard, Frandsen (or someone better) always batted for Asche, etc? When you also deploy Ruf strategically between some of the lefties, I think you can make it very costly for most teams to constantly be switching out pitchers.

We also could die from boredom of the sheer length of time those games might go, but I think you can make a 7 lefty/1 righty team work.

I'm sure that's already happening in some parallel universe.

add 6+ replays per game, and we may see a tent city outside of CBP next year

Speaking of tent city, how hot was Darin Ruf's sliding catch last night?

I like that he accuses Griffey of being on steroids bc he got injured a lot after 30 which is what would happen to someone not on PEDs.
He also backdates the end of the PED era quite a bit.

Last night the Rockies announcer guys' trivia question was kinda interesting. Name the five guys who had 4,000 or more hits major league and minor league combined.

Their answer was: Cobb; Aaron; Rose; Musial and Jigger Statz.

Jigger Statz? He amassed more than 3300 hits playing in the Pacific Coast League. The PCL back in the '10s, '20s and '30s was a near major league. A lot of really good players were in that league and were famous and made good money. Statz did play in the Majors for a while.

Anyway, if you go to Wikipedia, they claim Julio Franco belongs as well. He had a bunch of hits in Japan, Mexico and Korea and they count them as well.

Anyways, Ichiro joining the above club is what inspired the question. I believe Ichiro's Japanese record doesn't "count" towards his big league accomplishments but I believe they do count if you know what,I mean.
