It's not so much what Sandberg said about Jimmy, it's that anyone could reasonably believe it will makes a difference. I don't want to say it's impossible for a mid-30's hitter to change his approach significantly, but it's rare. And on the list of good candidates, Jimmy is near the bottom. Jimmy is Jimmy and he's very set in his ways.
When he had his power and speed, it was easy to overlook a so-so BA and OBP. It was easier to overlook the first-pitch pop outs. But now that his plus skills have diminished, his weaknesses are more noticeable. Low BA, low OBP, no power, average speed, average range. His only remaining plus quality is his sure-handedness.
I take nothing away from his many accomplishments. He's the greatest SS in Phillies history. But, in a meritocracy, he'd be a utility player at this point in his career. To my eyes it looks like his primary concern is to stay healthy so he can get his well-deserved Phillies records and collect his paychecks. We may yet see flashes of vintage Jimmy, but his skills have eroded and they're not coming back.

Jimmy has been bad this year and maybe it's over for him.
Then again, in 2011-12, only Reyes had a higher WAR than Jimmy among SS in all of MLB. Acting like he's been in some massive decline over the last few years is absurd. Maybe he's just having a bad year.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.
The Dude wrote:i wonder if cal ripken's fans bitched like this. probably
Ripken had a 3.9 WAR(BR) at the age of 34, Rollins is -.3 in the middle of August ......nobody would be bitching about Rollins if he was almost a 4 win player
That was the steroid era, and he was selfishly going after the iron man record by starting a game on the road and not actually playing. that kind of shit is selfish. a guy wanting to stay on the team he's always played on going after pretty meaningless records is not.
