Rarely, an aging athlete can squeeze a few more productive years by making some changes in approach, where the advantage of experience compensates for a decline in athletic ability.

He also gave the specific example of staying level on the ball to take it up the middle, which works with line drives and even grounders. Rather than upper-cutting/pulling everything, which does appear to be what Jimmy's doing, perhaps to cover for declining power

Whether Jimmy adapts is another story

Jimmy's LD rate is well above career average this year.

^ well, best since 2008 (22.7%, career 21%). the only thing that is way out of whack in his batted ball numbers is his HR/FB which is at a career low 3.4% (career 7.8%)

And his BABIP is right around career norms. Considering that the K% skyrocketed last year and is even higher this year, I agree that there are a lot of reasons to be concerned. The vesting option is a problem.

Oh and his IFFB% is back down to around career norms (12.8% 2013 vs. 11.4% career) after a crazy high 19% last season.

Dude, I do not remember, and couldn't find on wiki and a very casual google search, Cal Ripken starting a game and not playing in it. When did that happen?

I'm pretty sure it didn't. I grew up in the DC area and that would've been a huge controversy. There was definitely talk about him "doing the right thing" and sitting out a few games, but nothing about an empty start.

yes the controversy I'm familiar with (and this is mostly from Eskin, yikes) is that Ripken played all the games but he SHOULDN'T have because he was getting tired and wasn't as effective as if he took a day off a month or something.

I remember there being talk of him starting games and not finishing them, just for the streak, but not him actually doing it

I remember hearing that they turned the lights out one night to delay the game when he didn't make it to the stadium in time. that might've been made up too.

that's the costner rumor. he and costner were good friends, and costner was staying at his house. he left for the game, forgot something, went home, found costner banging his wife, and angelos cut the power when he couldn't get to the game on time
