I hope it is just a bad year. I'm hoping for a 1980/1983/1993 type season for the Phillies next season. Pete Incaviglia played by Darin Ruf. Mitch Williams played by Diekman. Lonnie Smith played by Ben Revere. Righty Martin is Marty Bystrom. Ryne Sandberg as Ivan DeJesus and Chuck Conners as the Sarge.

Rollins is comeback player of the year and Domonic Brown wins the Conn Smythe Trophy.

It could happen.

Does not appear to offer much. Another lefty bat but not a big platoon split.

A .178 BA ain't much to offer?

Who plays Ruben? I think that's the most important question. We need to know which 2014 Phillie will become GM and make us unwatchable again in 2024.

Ruben plays Ruben. No one else has the smug.

2024 GM will be. . . . Delmon Young.

Thanks, WIP caller! He has a career .325/.327/.503 batting line swinging at the first pitch FYI

my point stands that this idea that he's a sub replacement hitter swinging first pitch is ridiculous

My mistake. I'm too slow to realize that "the first-pitch pop outs" is an anagram for "sub replacement hitter swinging first pitch."

it's cute when you play dumb. You're the master of passive aggressive/loaded statements. Rollins, unsurprisingly for a mid 30s middle infielder, looks totally cooked.

Moreover, what more do you want from Sandberg than calling out Rollins and advocating OBP? I figured you'd be crazy happy

FFS, read the post again:

JFLNYC wrote:It's not so much what Sandberg said about Jimmy, it's that anyone could reasonably believe it will makes a difference. I don't want to say it's impossible for a mid-30's hitter to change his approach significantly, but it's rare. And on the list of good candidates, Jimmy is near the bottom. Jimmy is Jimmy and he's very set in his ways.

When he had his power and speed, it was easy to overlook a so-so BA and OBP. It was easier to overlook the first-pitch pop outs. But now that his plus skills have diminished, his weaknesses are more noticeable. Low BA, low OBP, no power, average speed, average range. His only remaining plus quality is his sure-handedness.

I take nothing away from his many accomplishments. He's the greatest SS in Phillies history. But, in a meritocracy, he'd be a utility player at this point in his career. To my eyes it looks like his primary concern is to stay healthy so he can get his well-deserved Phillies records and collect his paychecks. We may yet see flashes of vintage Jimmy, but his skills have eroded and they're not coming back.

If anyone wants to believe that Jimmy's just having a bad year (irrefutable) and will bounce back (dubious), more power to you. But the facts are: His K rate is his highest in 10 years. His OBP is the second lowest of his career. His SLG, wOBA and wRC+ are all career lows. His fielding and base running WAR's are his lowest in 10 years. His overall WAR is a career low. His UZR/150 is his lowest since his rookie year. After stealing 77 bases in 91 attempts over the previous 3 years (84.6%), this year he's 15 out of 21 (71.4%). When you consider that his BABIP is .280 -- his highest since 2008 and just a bit below his career mark -- the notion that he's going to transform into a high OBP stolen base machine is laughable.

I wish the whole discussion were a dead horse, but it's more like a dead cat that keeps getting dragged out in some delusional belief that Jimmy's just having a rough year and is going to rebound to become a productive hitter again in his mid-30's. The steroid era is over. Jimmy's not suddenly going to become a better hitter as he jogs towards 40.

Facing the facts is not pretty or easy. If anyone wants to click his heels together three times and pretend Jimmy's decline is a bad dream, be my guest. I'd prefer not to kid myself.

FFS, read the comments, to which you replied "Oh, brother." Sandberg didn't say Rollins is gonna beast next year, but that he needs to change his approach now. I took it as a small step toward him losing playing time, actually, but, you know, #pollyana
