Zambrano plus Delmon would be fun. Maybe they'll hire Ozzie Guillen when they can Charlie.

Adam Dunn's only benefit to the Phils would be to cut 45mill of Ryan's remaining contract. You still have to pay the man 30mill over the next two seasons and what do you get for that 30mill? Ben Revere type numbers from a 1Bman without the defensive or baserunning benefit. Or you could DFA him and be on the hook for 30mill anyway when nobody bothers to pick him up.

Ignoring your patronizing and sardonic undertones, I will focus on the actual content. I said that you would save $75 M, which is the difference between the two contracts. Howard is owed $105 M and Dunn $30 M. Even if you wind up eating the Dunn contract, which would essentially be no different than sending $30 M along with Howard for a mediocre prospect, you still save Howard's money. Howard has not been above a 2 WAR since 2009, yet accounts for 13% of this year's payroll, 24% of next years (admittedly we know little of its construction). Even if the team gets replacement level production from Dunn and above average production from Ruf, the club STILL benefits. Hell, even if the club gets replacement level production from Ruf and eats Dunn's contract, there are still ancillary benefits.

You assumed that I have some sort of desire for Dunn. My desire is to get rid of Howard.

Pick a better guy to trade him for, I find the idea of trading for Adam Dunn as abhorrent and completely mad. You're trying to justify trading for Adam Dunn who is finished as a way of offloading Howard, when it makes zero sense, yes zero sense. You could probably offload Howard and eat less of the contract than it'd cost to have Adam Dunn hit under .200 for.

So again, pick someone else.

Besides the contract, the problem with Howard is fit. The best possible fit is probably with Balitmore, which has a pedestrian .504 OPS from designated hitters. The Orioles farm is pretty thin outside of the top two, but in Howard's case, taking a lesser prospect for more salary relief is a better option. The Orioles aren't exactly known for free-spending, so the financial problems are compounded.

Two off days in one week? Wtf.

Will phils skip Cloyd and let Lee pitch on normal rest Friday? That usually isn't Charlie's style. I have tix for next Saturday so I'm curious if it'll be Lee or KK.

So Pettibone/Hamels vs the Indians and Lee/Kendrick/Pettibone vs the Reds

Is Cloyd going to pitch vs Miami then?

Phillies DP combination of the future? Cesar Hernandez (2B) and Freddy Galvis (SS)

If they deal Jimmy, yes. But otherwise I could see Freddy at third next year (or later this year), with Hernandez at second.

Of course, that would require getting some offense from those guys that stand behind them.

IIRC Isn't there a minimum time you have to stay in the minors unless there's an injury?

The Phillies haven't really done a lot well so far this season. But for a team that hates to walk, they've drawn only 7 fewer walks than league average. This is after a really horrible early stretch where they hardly walked at all.

The great Washington Nationals have walked even less than the Phils.

I think Chooch Ruiz returning to a good hitting walk drawer and Domonic Brown getting good would help them a lot.

Wishful thinking perhaps but I'm far from giving up on this bunch. The Halladay situation really hurts but if they start winning some Hamels starts, we might see some good things ahead.

Of the nearly 50 Phillies teams I have followed over the years, this club isn't even close to being the least likable or whatever. Once favorite prospects Cesar Hernandez, Cameron Rupp and Cam Perkins arrive, I'll like them even more better.

Schielholtz age 29 season:112 PAs .291/.333/.524
John Mayberry Jr during his age 27 season: 179 PA .301/.358/.607

Schielholtz had a 97 OPS+ for his career before this year. Can we knock off the hindsight hand wringing please?

He was a cheap option who would've been a great platoon player. Thankfully we have Delmon to run out there daily.
