Productive Outs - Phillies Random Thoughts

I'm sure I don't watch as many games as a few years ago, but I used to love shots of hitters chatting with Cholly in the dugout shortly after an at-bat. J-Roll especially seemed to do this a lot. It gave me the sense that Manuel was still an effective hitting advisor while he managed. But I can't remember the last time I saw an exchange like that on TV.

Papelbon has a 0.96 ERA. That's not bad.

You are confusing Biddle as a top MLB prospect and not just a top Phillies prospect.

I didn't mention Charlie's dismissal because I think he's at fault here. I've never felt he was a particularly good manager, but was perfect for the 08-10 type teams. But, this roster is just abysmal right now, and I think it's on the cruel side to let him manage it out, when it's pretty much a given he's gone. Frame it as "stepping down", no need to fire the guy.

I also agree that at least there's a chance Sandberg would be willing to platoon the guys that need platooning (Howard, Mayberry), and maybe the move wakes a couple of these fuckers up.

he can definitely use the whole season down there. both wacha and gausman were advanced college guys. i'd take biddle over wacha fwiw.

yea this.

i'd say at this point, biddle is a surefire top 50 guy, likely close to a top 25 guy. hes put up results at AA despite being one of the youngest pitchers at that level across the 3 double A leagues.

gausman and wacka were polished college pitchers. gausman obviously has big upside, a mid-upper 90s fastball and a good changeup, but wacka is a mid rotation starter. biddle has the tools to be a solid #2. theres no need to rush him. he might get the bump to AAA at the end of this year, he'll start there next year, and then he'll make his debut sometime in 2014. no need to rush him.

I really like Charlie but his demeanor this season has showed me that he has one foot out the door. He constantly cracks jokes and has a la-di-da attitude during interviews and the camera catches him at least once a game joking around and laughing in the dugout with Mick Billmeyer (maybe this clown is better off in the bullpen). I just don't see the desire to manage this team. He's also at the stage of his career where he doesn't seem to want to piss off any players, particularly Rollins, Howard, etc. If that's the case, he needs to go. Whether he gets fired now or leaves at the end of the year, it will not affect his legacy in Philly.

A few months ago, when people were enthusiastic of a potential Sandberg skippership, I was curious so I googled and such for anything I can find (articles, quotes, etc.) that could give me some indication of his managerial style/philosophy. Some of what I found that tempered my enthusiasm were things like he's firey, has a strong preference for "gamers", very much tied to roles, and someone saying (with regard to his old-schooliness) he probably doesn't even know what OPS is yet alone anything more advanced (paraphrasing). I was left feeling there's a good possibility he'd be Larry Bowa redux.

If any of that is true, I can see the FO firing Manuel in favor of Sandberg to placate the WIP crowd if attendence/interest declines further.

Why exactly is Howard trying to play thru this knee injury ? It's been bothering him since the start of the season and it hasn't gotten better with a cortisone shot. If he can't hit with power he's close to useless so just get the surgery now and fix it.

Lee should hit tonight and leave young on the bench and have galvis play 3rd. Or have Delmon young not play. Know it would never happen
