There are reasons why they have those numbers on the back of their baseball cards. Yeah, like when Howard was 7 years younger in 2006 or when Michael Young was in his prime about 5 years ago.

I will cling to the hope that he says that stuff partly to troll the media and partly to appeal to the masses, because jesus christ

It's become a pretty common expression nowadays. It doesn't mean much.

If on-base percentage is so important, then why don't they put it up on the scoreboard?

I'm not shy about criticizing Rube, but that's just another way of saying a player's got a track record of production. NBD IMO.

What he said wouldn't bother me much if he actually acquired guys with /good/ "back of baseball card" numbers.

It's like Sarge said last night, I understand OBP is important, but give me the guy who will knock in 100 runs.

Sarge has been saying some dumb stuff, especially about Votto. But to be fair, he's been harping all year on getting deep into counts to get a pitch to drive. And their approach is clearly driving Wheeler nuts

I like Sarge but he frequently makes TMac look like "the smart one". It's depressing.

I agree. If you have a guy knocking in 100 runs it means your offense is probably competent on the whole

i think its certainly possible to be too passive. utley is too passive at times. good hitters can take strike 1 and get down 0-2 or 1-2 and then foul off pitches, lay off close pitches, and get to full counts. and the best hitters will still get on base at a good clip even when spotting the opposing pitcher an easy first strike. i think it would be beneficial for utley to swing at a few more first pitch meatballs. especially when hes locked in. same for votto, and the same for all elite hitters. but you shouldnt swing at shit in an attempt to loop a single to right field instead of drawing a walk. selective, targeted aggression.

Seems like Utley's been swinging at more first pitches lately. I know he had a couple of 1-pitch ABs over the weekend, including his RBI single on Sunday.

Seems a lot easier to say "stay patient, but swing at first pitch meatballs" than it actually is.

Utley is 7 for 14 with 2 HR, a triple, and 5 RBI this year when swinging at the first pitch.
