I'd also recall Stutes and Robles (from AA) today, cut Durbin and demote Horst.

Sadly they don't have too many other moves they can make.

Yea....not sure I'd have gambled on Delmon though, but no big loss.

The thing that's been bothering me the past few days, and I usually bring this up once a season, is how bad our Latin American program has been. All of these years when we were giving up first round picks or drafting in the bottom of the first round, we should have been going hard in the international market. We all know that wasn't the case. Our minor league system might be in average shape right now if we had any success in Latin America.

Couldn't agree more. Their big advantage since 2009 has been money, and they weren't able to spend it in the draft. $5 million or what have you was an enormous bonus for an international signing (non-Cuban or Japanese); it's also half what a Marco Scutaro gets. Every time a Sano or whoever was up, the Phillies should have been in on him. But I don't think they've ever gone over $750k or so for a bonus. Absolutely baffling and disturbingly reminiscent of how they declined in the '80s after the last golden age.

I doubt it, short of a hot streak. He gets another $100K after 40 days on the roster, and one of his six weigh ins (another $100K) must be happening soon

We better not see his ass tonight

Does it matter? There's a 100% chance that they will use some kind of Galvis/Frandsen platoon at 3B and move Michael Young to 1B. Barf.

Maybe Young will pull a hamstring chasing down an errant Utley throw.

But he's our 2nd best hitter!

On Phillies Offense, Amaro: “I think it can. I don’t have a crystal ball that says it will and it hasn’t shown the consistency that would make you think it will. But there are reasons they have those numbers on the back of their baseball cards. I think when it’s all said and done, we will have more productive numbers than we do right now as a group. But it is concerning that we haven’t had more consistency at this stage of the season.”

There are reasons why they have those numbers on the back of their baseball cards. Yeah, like when Howard was 7 years younger in 2006 or when Michael Young was in his prime about 5 years ago.

Law on ESPN insider did a redraft of the first round of thr 2003 draft. We didn't have a pick in the first because we gave it up for signing Thome from the Indians, but Cyle Kendrick made an appearance:

30. Kansas City Royals*

Kyle Kendrick | RHP, Mount Vernon (Wash.) HS
Kendrick has remade himself as a pitcher since late last summer, changes detailed by Bill Baer over at Crashburn Alley, which is part of the SweetSpot network.

I agree with Bill that Kendrick's ERA isn't sustainable -- it's at 2.47 this year, and 2.45 since that Aug. 8 cutoff point Bill cites -- but I do think the increased use of the changeup has turned him into a potentially league-average starter. He gets more swings and misses on that pitch from right- and left-handed hitters than he did with the cutter, and the changeup is making the fastball more effective as well.

He hasn't produced as much value to date as some players I left off this redraft, like Ryan Sweeney or Kevin Kouzmanoff, but I'm projecting solid production from him over the next five years.

Kendrick's actual draft spot: No. 205 (seventh round, Phillies)
Kansas City's pick: Mitch Maier, OF, Toledo
*This pick was compensation from the Braves for signing Paul Byrd.

I disagree with Rube. I think our hitters have been very consistent this year, with a very occasional outburst of productivity.

Did he really say that? And did he actually look at the baseball cards of some of these guys? Some of them have always been bad.
