You can nitpick about whether guys like Marson and Donald are real-world MLB starters (they aren't), but the general point is fairly legit. Should change with DOM and I expect d'Arnaud and Gose will be real players. Part of it is organizational draft philosophy that focuses on pitching (and pretty effectively), part of it is the fact that they have had anchors at C, 1B, 2B, SS and CF for the last 6-7 years, which resulted in trades (two bad ones with Houston in my view). Part of it is they have sucked at drafting position players. I don't know how big of a deal it is right now, but it is going to be a big deal soon, so I hope we have the right guys in Quinn, Asche, Joseph, etc....but it would beyond idiotic to expect any of these guys to be anything close to the once-in-a-lifetime talents of Utley/Rollins and to a far lesser extent Chooch and Howard.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

I pretty much agree. Mason and the Donald aren't much good.

D'Arnaud is the best C prospect around and he could be good as soon as this season as long as he stays healthy. Singleton the doper is the best 1st base prospect in MLB. He should be pretty good if he's lays off the chorch some.

I'm not even sure about Gose though. He still has some weaknesses that might derail him. But he's certainly has potential.

Brown MIGHT be real good.

Bourn has been very good.

That's about it.

Position players have not been a strength in their drafting. They have gone for a bunch of tool sheds. Hewitt was a real long shot but had possibilities. None of the rest of those guys have really panned out much yet. Collier has a chance to step up this season I guess.

Domingo Santana was very young in the hitter friendly Cal League last season and put up some really nice (but inflated) numbers. It will be interesting to follow him.

Marson and Donald were very good at being traded for Cliff Lee.

It's hard to find good position players to draft.

They're all good when they're drafted. They were stars some where. Most of them don't stay good for long. As they advance, the best of them become prospects and then maybe hot prospects. Some of them fizzle at AA and AAA or wait until they hit the show to bomb out.

The few. The very few actually become good big leaguers.

Drafting is a funny game.

Except for when the government does it. Greetings! No one laughed at that one.

Howard was actually drafted in 2001. In 2002 we got Cole Hamels and not much else.

I get that you're being facetious, but the argument that they haven't had high first round picks to draft high-end high school bats seems like a fair point.

The organizational philosophy for the last however long I can remember has centered around pitching and tools guys. Some of the tools guys panned out. Brown, even if he doesn't become a star, has to be considered a tools guy that was/is something of value. Bourn and Gose also panned out. Now, obviously, for every one of them, there's a couple Greg Golsons and Anthony Hewitts, but when you either draft in the low 20's or use your pick to sign free agents to help load up the big club, of course it's tough to draft impact bats. Arms aren't necessarily easier to develop, but when they're developed, you can always trade pitching for offense. You can't always trade offense for pitching.

Mayberry is kind of interesting. He has good numbers vs. HUDDY, but so does Nix
