If those vets aren't healthy and productive, they bring little or nothing in the way of quality prospects. Either way, you don't get what you need to rebuild. And you can't trade Halladay, Utley or Chooch in the off-season since their contracts will have ended.

By the way, Michael Young has a FNTC.

Murphy projects the Phillies to open the season around 11 million under lux tax. Optimistically I'm hoping this provides them the flexibility to add someone mid season who is not available now.

If the Phils focus on that, they're getting themselves into a death spiral. You worry about the lower ratings, so you cut back on payroll. Cutting back on payroll yields an inferior team, which both doesn't generate much buzz and performs also performs poorly, so ratings dip lower. With ratings lower, you cut back on payroll even more, which yields a still worse team, etc., etc. Worrying too much about those lower ratings becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
