Yeah, but GMs dont get fired over a million here, a million there. They get fired for signing your league average 1B to a $125MM extension through his mid 30s. Hopefully.

Lannen is not only in the best shape of his career and finally over the nagging injuries that have plaugued him this past decade and a half, but he started a throwing program with the objective of breaking the hands of both lefties AND righties.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

The only problem with rebuilding is that our prospects range from "meh" to "suck" and there are no vets on the roster likely to get us a haul of prospects. Absent some sort of alchemy, there's gonna be some lean years ahead.

So the team that came into last season the Vegas favorite is not only doomed this season but has no sellable pieces? C'mon.

They're going on another 13 year division run.

I think the offense, even with the Youngs, will score enough runs to win.

This season will ultimately come down to whether or not Halladay can be a dominant #1 again, whether or not Mike Adams can hold leads in the 8th, and lastly, whether or not Utley and Howard can stay healthy.

If those three things go our way, we make the postseason.

This is kind of a weird point. Who cares what they were in March in Vegas? They won 81 games with the oldest team in MLB. They haven't gotten better this year, but they have gotten older. Hopefully, they have gotten healthier.

I wouldn't say they are doomed.

I think it's entirely fair to say that they are likely a mediocre team with almost no parts that would provide meaningful return in a trade.

I'm just saying, you don't go from odds-on favorites to chumps in one year. Especially since there was concern over Utley and Howard and, to a lesser extent, Halladay last March.

And we couldn't get much for Utley, Ruiz, Halladay, Lee, or Papelbon in July (assuming they were playing well)? I really doubt that. I know Lee's deal is heavy, but he's very good. And Papelbon's new team would be committing to less than the Nationals just did for Soriano.

The sky is not falling.

Grote, I'd rather not base my analysis on what Vegas thinks is a lock for a season. They are in the business of making money off people gambling, not putting together winning baseball teams.

that's before we get to the point that this is what Vegas thought last year.

I don't agree at all. The Phillies have a lot of vets who could be extremely helpful to a contender in a deadline deal. They are over-flowing with such players. They have to be healthy and playing tolerably well for a sucky Phillies team for deals to be likely, but I can't really think of anyone who would be a more attractive trade target than Halladay, Papelbon, Utley. If one of the Youngs turns it around by mid-year, he could bring back a little in return. If the Phillies are really going to pack it in and go with kids, Ruiz would also bring a big, big return from the right pennant contender. Adams could bring a decent return. With that you've written off 2014 into total rebuild mode, but 2015 could look pretty good. For 2014 you go with the kids: Brown, Ruf, Galvis, Asche, Martin, Biddle, Pettibone, Aumont, DeFratus, Rosenberg, Joseph/Valle, Hernandez, Gillies.
We now know that Amaro really is running the Phillies. He and Monty seem to have ignored the committee.
