Young was signed for 750 K. I don't think he is the key to the season. Hamels, Lee, Halladay, Utley, Howard. Rollins, Chooch, and a bunch of other guys will determine the Phillies fate this year.

Young is a depth move who has a half assed chance to have a Juan Pierre good type season. I'm not counting on it though.

i really hope youre right. when i first heard they signed young for a 1 year 750k contract i thought, delmon young fucking blows. but, if hes going to be a guy that competes with brown/ruf in ST, or just ends up filling out the roster its not totally bad. (though delmon young is so bad that the phils shouldve just promoted any OF in the org) But then amaro is talking about him being a starter? thats fucking crazy talk. the 2013 phillies may have just acquired 2 of the worst baseball players in 2012. thats kind of a hard pill to swallow.

To be fair, they normally go hand in hand, rendering the quote irrelevant. But I realize guys like M Young and Delmon rely highly on BABIP, and that spending significant resources on guys like that in the future would be harmful

I would pay money to throw tomatoes at Amaro. They should think about doing that for charity.

maybe they are silently committed to a rebuilding/retooling and think holding on to Asche, Franco, Biddle and the gang is a better route than adding someone like Upton - who I don't think would have everyone here saying it puts us back on top of the NL East on paper - to an aging core

Not as good as leading the league in MVP candidates however.

Perhaps. However, it's hard to see how Delmon Young fits into this plan, unless we're turning around and flipping Mayberry for a prospect. Ruf and Brown need to play so we can determine whether, well, they can play.

That's what I feel like they are doing which is why I'm not getting too excited about any of the moves (while not enjoying any of them either). They are basically adding no significant salaries beyond this year and not giving up any top prospects or draft picks while staying below the lux tax this year. If the aging core can get it together in the beginning of the season and keep them in the race, maybe they rethink and add someone in the middle of the year and take the lux hit or give up prospects. If not, they sell off what they can mid season and get what they can.

Previous risks put them in this position now and they can't really move any of their big salaries and retool. So they have to wait until after this season for a couple of the big salaries to expire and for some of the prospects to either become major leaguers or more valuable trading chips before they can do any revamping. Any of the big moves would have put them at risk for future seasons and may not have helped enough this year anyway. Not fun but it might be a realistic approach given the circumstances. I'll just keep reminding myself how crappy I thought the previous WS winners were and how great the Phillies were when not winning the WS.

This is looking way ahead but with the money the Phils have coming off the books next off-season, it would be a nice time to fire Amaro and hire someone with a clue, as he'll have about as much of a clean canvas as is possible

I don't see that happening for a while. Based on absolutely nothing, I doubt there is a perception that Amaro is doing poorly. Afterall, look at all those wins! Sellouts! Halladay and Lee were big moves that have worked out reasonably well.

If ownership was interested in a SABR-minded GM, they wouldnt have hired Wade/Gillick/Amaro in the first place.

I don't think you need to be a SABR GM to realize that Laynce Nix and Delmon Young are ass. Nix is still here, ffs
