I'll never understand all the negavitiy on here. Are there concerns? Absolutely. But this doom and gloom nonsense is over the top.

I think BSG's mental health this season will be determined by status of Halladay. If he's himself again people will be fine, if not the board will probably be pretty miserable

Not seeing a lot of doom and gloom. Seeing a lot of people pissed with the offseason, but just because we knew it was coming, doesn't mean people will actually like it.

There's folk pissed with Amaro now and some excessively shrill bleating about how he's the most anti-sabremetric GM ever, but that's been brewing since the Howard contract.

I'm not going to get gloomy till we fuck up on the rebuild and spend four or five years in the shite just like the bad old days of the 90s. But you'd be a fool to think other than a)a lot has to go right for us to win the division and b)there are going to be a lot of frustrating as fuck games, whichever way you put together the lineup out of the current pool of players.

What are the chances of Mayberry platooning with Brown in left, and Ruf starting the season in AAA? Unless Ruf really tears it up in spring training, might it be better for him to get regular playing time every day in AAA, rather than on the short side of a platoon in the majors?
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

I think everybody's forgetting that we still have Halladay, Lee, and Hamels starting 3/5 of our games, with Papelbon closing. We're going to win the division running away. Our offense might not be what it once was, but it should be good enough. I'd be willing to place non-monetary bets on our chances. We are going to win the NL East.

The Nats are counting on a healthy Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, and this Zimmerman guy. The Braves have an outfield, a bullpen, and nothing else. The Mets are in a rebuilding limbo, and the Marlins are determined to suck. The Phillies have a pair of Cy Youngs plus Cole Hamels. We're better than all of them. Have some faith.

We're not getting 60% of our starts from those 3 because of inevitable injury. Even if we do, there's a possibilty Doc's elite days are over. In fact, it's likely we'll get more than half our starts from Kendrick, Lannan, Cloyd and somebody like Cook.

I could see why you wouldn't predict a 100 win season with this bunch, but I don't see why JFLNYC even bothers. Yeah, the new guys aren't getting anyone excited, but still.

Rollins--crafty vet who will score runs
Utley--even if his best days are behind him, he's still an allstar at 2b.
Chooch--among the best catchers in the game.
Howard--stop whining about the damn contract. He's overpaid. End of discussion. He's still a productive power hitter, he looks pretty fit in those subway ads.
Cole--would be #1 on most teams.
Lee--would be #1 on most teams.
Halladay--is #1 on one of the most dominant staffs in the majors.
Papelbon--quality closer.

So, a dominant pitching staff and very good infield. Some potential in the outfield if things go well. Long term, the Phillies will have increased flexibility going forward. They can still be a destination for free agents. Go Phils.
Be Bold!

i think the pen will be very very good this year. my only concern is lannan as the 5. would rather invest in one year of lohse(yes i know we lose the pick).....and move kendrick to 5th starter.

i still think the offense will be good enough but if it isnt...ruben has left room for addition midseason.

nats and braves on paper are better...i cant dispute that..but i think the team could be very good.

Every season, there are certain players who get overlooked by their own teams. The reasons are myriad, but in many cases, the player ends up being seen as a victim, and calls for the "Free Player X" campaign to begin in earnest. Oftentimes, the player fizzles when he is eventually freed (see Pena, Wily Mo). Other times, he becomes a Hall of Famer (see Boggs, Wade).

The 2013 season will be no different. Let's take a look at five players who fit the bill:

Domonic Brown, OF, Philadelphia Phillies
It's true that Brown had his chance toward the tail end of last season, and it's true that he didn't do a ton to justify the Phillies' love heading into 2013. He hit just five homers in 212 plate appearances, and while he improved his ISO by 13 points, it was a marginal gain.

Still, rather than publicly saying that the team believes in Brown, its message to him has consistently been "show me you belong." That's not always the environment best suited to success, especially when that environment also contains 40,000 fans who are frothing at the mouth. The team has now signed Delmon Young, and even though ZiPS projects Brown to have a wOBA 20 points higher than Young, Young has been handed a starting gig and Brown will have to fight for a share of the left-field job with John Mayberry Jr., Laynce Nix and Darin Ruf.

It's time for Brown to get out of Philadelphia. He might not have a ton of trade value, but the Phillies should trade him and see if he can flourish in a more accommodating market.
Solution: Trade to the Minnesota Twins
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."
