Because Rube isn't going to sign Lidge mark 2, only he'd cost more and we wouldn't have the memories of the perfect season to remember him by.

Why wouldnt we just sign Madson if we were going to overpay for a closer?

no way we put that kind of money into any closer, including madson. my guess is they sign a closer(defined as a guy with closer experience) for 4-6 million and use the free agent money on offense. 3b,ss,potentially a LH LF or 1b guy.

Uh, Madson is going to be far better than Papelbon is during the duration of their next contracts, so we could still overpay quite easily if Madson gets more money.

Based on the fact I think Papelbon is an asshat and that he's going to have some crappy years. Madson will be more consistent and will just be better.

Yeah, Papelbon really struggled this year. 64.1 IP, allowed 50 hits, 10 walks, 87 K's, 3 homers. 0.933 WHIP. Fewer hits, fewer walks, more K's per 9 than Madson this year.

Over the last 3 years:

Papelbon: 199.1 IP, 161 H, 62 BB, 239 K, 1.119 WHIP, 2.89 ERA, 154 ERA+
Madson: 191 IP, 169 H, 51 BB, 204 K, 1.152 WHIP, 2.78 ERA, 147 ERA+

They're the same age, they've pitched about the same over the last 3 years.

Paying 12 mill a year for a closer again would be such a waste.

4/56 for Jimmy is pretty crazy too.

Didn't see this mentioned on here, but saw it on twatter from passan

[quote]
He looped down the dugout steps and into the Cardinals’ video room, where the warmth helped dry the booze from his sopping-wet clothes. In there were Aldrete and Pat Burrell(notes), the former outfielder who won a championship with San Francisco last year. Burrell is a friend of infielder Nick Punto(notes) and not some Forrest Gump type who shows up at historic events, though he had somehow weaseled his way into one-on-one time with Freese. And as they chatted, and the Future Mrs. Freese waited for her future husband to return, the few people left in the still-full lower bowl who hadn’t touched Freese’s hand hoped to raise him with a chant that won’t get old anytime soon in St. Louis.[\quote]

PtB twat blocking freese. Love it.

I'm not sure what teams are likely to spend big for a closer this year

I could see FLA or WAS doing it after other FAs refuse to take their money

Maybe CIN if they want to start Chapman? Maybe LAD?

I think DET is gonna stick w/Valverde, STL probably go with Motte and focus on Pujols, MIN, BAL, TOR, ARI, GEES probably go cheap route

I supposed TEX could too if they want to start Feliz and Ogando, but they still have Adams

Every story I have ever heard about Pat Burrell has never disappointed. Except for the story where he batted .209.

The Reds will likely pick up Cordero's option (EDIT: or not)
The Dodgers will stick with Javy Guerra
The Tigers already picked up Valverde's option
