Which really brings us to the unluckiest part (only unlucky?) of that team: having to face the back-to-back-to-back WS champions.

The 9/11 attack took a lot of the joy and enthusiasm out of that season. It was really exciting here for most of the year and then -- it was kind of like who cares?

I said at the beginning of the season that the Phillies had the best team in the NL. It was theirs to win. Due to some injuries and other complications, it's taken them to this point to get to the forefront. But I still think they're the best team. When they got Oswalt, that solidified their pitching. It doesn't get any better than Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels.

Joe is smart sometimes.

later he says of the Reds' rotation of Volquez, Cueto and Arroyo:

I would only give an edge to the Phillies and that's a very slight edge.

Don't be fooled by Bronson's ERA, his musical talents clearly make him the best all-around pitcher of the bunch

From Joe Morgan's Chat:

Ted-o (Brooklyn) wrote:Now that the Red Sox are unofficially eliminated from the AL Wild Card Race, making the AL East just a two-team affair, do you think the NL West has taken over as the best playoff race in baseball?

Joe Morgan wrote:Well, it's the only race. Both the Yankees and Rays will be in. The Twins are way ahead, as are the Reds. The Phillies and Braves are battling, but the West has a three team race, so it's more compelling.

Moose Haas was listed at 6', 180. Probably the smallest guy named Moose ever.

Mule Haas was listed at 6'1", 175 -- probably fairly big for the time.

EDIT: Wow. Elmer "Moose" Eggert was only 5'9. 160. He only played 5 big league games and was named Elmer Eggert so the Moose was probably a joke like when they nickname a bald guy Curly and stuff like that.

As a player Moose Stubing was 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts in the big leagues. As a manager he was 0-8. Wow.

Strange article, but here goes:

....A curious phenomenon has emerged at the intersection of fashion, sports and crime: dozens of men and women who have robbed, beaten, stabbed and shot at their fellow New Yorkers have done so while wearing Yankees caps or clothing....

Since 2000, more than 100 people who have been suspects or persons of interest in connection with serious crimes in New York City wore Yankees apparel at the time of the crimes or at the time of their arrest or arraignment. The tally is based on a review of New York Police Department news releases, surveillance video and images of robberies and other crimes, as well as police sketches and newspaper articles that described suspects’ clothing. No other sports team comes close.

The Mets, forever in the shadow of their Bronx rivals, are perhaps grateful to be losing this one: only about a dozen people in the same review were found to be wearing Mets gear.

Not surprisingly,
The Yankees organization declined to comment for this article.

Is there a website that shows all of the players who have worn particular numbers for teams? I've looked on baseball reference assuming it was there but I can't find it.

Go to any MLB city in the country and find out which team's cap is the most commonly worn. The Yankees will be either #1, #2 or #3 (in Chicago or maybe L.A.). It's a stupid story.

Better yet, go to the Yankees home city and see what team's merchandise is the most popular. Of course more people in New York wear Yankees gear than any other team's while committing crimes. More people in New York wear Yankees gear to go to the store or go to the driving range or to get some food than any other team's gear too.

me and my friend were arguing/discussing save situtations last night. maybe this is common knowledge that you all know and i've just been oblivious to it my whole life or maybe the situation is rare and i just don't notice it when it happens. the contention is that in a three run game, you must start the inning to get the save if the tying run is not on deck. let me give example:

the phils lead 4-1 to start the bottom of the 9th on the road. there is a lefty leading off and charlie uses bastardo to start the inning. bastardo strikes the guy out. charlie then brings lidge in. my friend contends that lidge is entering into a non-save situation and if lidge retires the final two batters, he is not credited with the save.

neither of us could think of an instance to prove our point. my thought was that even if the rule book states that as a non-save situation, the official scorer would still award a save to lidge.

Your friend is correct:

Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
- (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
- (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or
- (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

yeah we looked at that, but wondered if that is one of the rules like "the official scorer can award the win to the pitcher who pitched the best". it's the official rule, but very rarely is used. i could see the rule evolving to where if a pitcher finishes a game with a 3 run lead regardless of situation he is awarded the save.

i guess i just didn't know the rule because i have never seen that happen in any baseball game i've ever witnessed.
