2010 payroll too high when you include cash to Jays. Won't happen.

MLB office hasn't granted the Phillies permission to negotiate with Halladay -- yet. Might not have an announcement today. But looks close. 7 minutes ago from web

I'm thinking there's not. The price for keeping Lee is getting $$ from the Jays and the price for that money is Drabek and Brown -- or so I fear. The consolation would be keeping Happ, though:

Halladay
Lee
Hamels
Blanton
Happ

Yes. It involves hostages, waterboarding, and a truckload of speedballs.

So you're saying Amaro can pull it off.

And to think, there was Phillies fans who dreaded Amaro getting the job.

I was in that boat.

We don't have concepts adequate to express how much better he's been compared to my expectations.

Ditto!

Halladay was better than Lee last year. Has a much better track record. And is a massive groundball/control/innings eating pitcher. His decline is going to be gradual, if he declines at all any time soon. His last two seasons were elite. His "down" in 2007 was better than anything Lee had done up till 2008. I just think he's the better pitcher, by a substantial margin.

Having both, even if it's just for one year, makes us damn near unbeatable in a 7 game series.

This. Worry about 2011 in 2011.

Thanks, but that's not me.

Who's OK with Drabek and Brown if it means we get $$ from Jays and keep Lee, Blanton and Happ?

seems odd. If the team allows it, how does MLB step in? And why would they?

FWIW, PECOTA has Halladay at 17.5 WARP over the next 6 years compared to Lee at 13.2.

(If you want 5 year comparisons, Halladay at 15.7 and Lee at 12.1.)

Just money, no bullpen piece?

I'd probably be okay with that.

I want no part of trading Drabek. None.

I'd rather deal Happ plus, of course, and keep one or the other.

But your five is a pretty devastating rotation.

So, are Drabek+Brown worth Lee in 2010 + 2 draft picks? Probably. But I can understand why Amaro wouldn't do it.

And remember - something like 30% of the Phils postseason starts in 08-09 were made by pitchers who weren't here in June.

Have faith in Rube.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Me, too. I'm thinking this may be what goes down and the only remaining question is whether RAJ can get Halladay to defer some 2010 $$. What a rotation we'd have in 2010!!!
