The OLD Halladay/Smug thread is HERE

Having both, even if it's just for one year, makes us damn near unbeatable in a 7 game series.

Or we couldn't have, because there's a certain point where it looks really, really, you-look-cute-but-you're-ugly-and-it's-3AM-in-a-bar bad type of idea to give a guy 7 years, $130 million to pitch baseball for your team.

I'd rather take a stab at signing Halladay as a FA than lose Lee now.

agree. i think our chances of signing halladay next offseason would be excellent. if we assume that halladay signs and lee doesn't next offseason, and that the two aren't too far apart in what they would give the phillies in 2010, lee-for-halladay doesn't gain us anything in 2010, and loses us taylor/brown in 2011 and beyond. if the net cost in dollars is too much, it also could rule out signing pedro in 2010.

the only way this works for me is if we get (really) good prospects at our positions of need (ss).

He's going to trade Blanton for two prospects, both of whom will be packaged with Taylor and two other prospects from our system plus a PTBNL, and sent to Toronto. Toronto will send 5M back in the deal.

He keeps Lee. Every news outlet marvels at his ability to keep Lee while adding Halladay. He smugly grins.

And then I piss myself.

Any scenario that ends with a smug grin and Halladay to his left works for me

That's easy for you to say. Not so much when you are the GM.

Now the question: Is there a scenario where:

1. We keep Lee
2. We keep Blanton
3. We get money from Jays
4. We keep both Drabek and Brown?

I'm thinking there's not. The price for keeping Lee is getting $$ from the Jays and the price for that money is Drabek and Brown -- or so I fear. The consolation would be keeping Happ, though:

Halladay
Lee
Hamels
Blanton
Happ
Jamie

Yeah. I don't disagree.

I'm just really hoping for the FTW rotation in 2010.

And to think, there was Phillies fans who dreaded Amaro getting the job.

I was in that boat.

We don't have concepts adequate to express how much better he's been compared to my expectations.

Blanton, Taylor, Bastardo to Jays plus cash to pay for Blanton. We get Halladay and Carlson. Everyone is happy. Book it.

I'm having a fantasy. We get Halladay with a long term deal and Lee signs a 4 year extension.

Ooops. My pants got sticky. Just like with all my other fantasies.

Yes. It involves hostages, waterboarding, and a truckload of speedballs.
