But one year of Lee in this situation could be equivalent to Drabek + Brown, who stand a good chance of being quality major-leaguers while saving the payroll from ~2011-2013.

I'm all about winning next year, as I wrote a few pages back, but I understand and am glad that Smuggles feels otherwise.

That said...

I wonder if the Phils could have gone the hard-line route Floppy suggested and basically waited out the Jays until they had to deal Roy for Kendrick plus Collier.

Presumably the risk there is another team sweeping in, if Halladay isn't as singularly focused on the Phils as we want to believe he is, and/or that they can't make the budget work for whatever reason. But there are a few flavors of downside risk here, exciting as it is.

Does Lee have a FNTC? Would he accept a trade to Seattle?

I suspect Halladay is not leaving Philly without a contract extension.

We've learned that's not RAJ's style. He wants what he wants and he's not going to play chicken to get it.

I'm significantly less enthused about trading for Halladay if it means losing Lee.

If we end up doing a trading Lee and then trading for Halladay type deal, I'd only particularly like it if we end up getting more for Lee than we have to give up to get Halladay. That is, if it ends up being something like Lee for Halladay + something. Yes, i know there's the point about Roy signing an extension and Lee not doing so, but I'm not all that adverse to getting draft picks either.

This is all an elaborate mindf*** (including Halladay body doubles) to get Lee's agent to take Amaro's extension offer?

I think we're going to see Roy ending up signing a deal for about four years, probably $72.5 mil. Just a rough guess. Better than paying Lee $22-23 million/year. It's a tough pill to swallow for sure if they trade Lee and Taylor just to get Halladay and Carlson. I almost feel like we should get something else if that's the case.

The contract is close/done, you mean? Wow. I would have guessed the other way around.

Is there any version of a deal that includes Lee and makes the team better *this* year?

Scott Boras would garrotte Halladay's agent if he signed that extension

Halladay > Lee, none of the prospects are going to play this year?

I believe in the magic. I think RAJ is going to push hard for $$ from Jays and for Halladay to defer some 2010 salary so he can keep Lee.

BUT

There's a price to be paid. If he's going to insist on $$ from the Jays, they're going to want better/more prospects.

Which basically means that Halladay is giving a discount.

Aren't they getting money from the Jays, also? Or is that just another rumor?
