John Smoltz was apparently upset by the move and left the team without cleaning out his locker.

JP: "I would like an eighth card, please."
DEALER: "Um...no. That's not how it wor--"
JP: "It's going to take an additional card to get this thing done."
DEALER: "To get what thing done?"
JP: "Look, if you expect me to risk additional chips, I'm going to need more cards. Simple as that. We're talking about some great chips here. I'm not saying we're definitely going to put them in the pot. But if something makes sense -- like an eighth card, preferably a Jack -- then we at least have to listen."
DEALER: "No, JP. You can't have another card."
JP: "Well then I fold."

RHP Mariano Rivera presided over his second Kangaroo Court of the season before Tuesday's game, but this time he looked much more like a judge than the first. As part of their loose clubhouse atmosphere this season, the Yankees have revived the old tradition in which players are fined for various "infractions" decided by a jury of their amused peers. Judge Marilyn Milian of "The People's Court" heard about the Yankees' practice and gave Rivera a robe and gavel to make the proceedings more authentic.

Currently a player is considered to be a rookie, and thus eligible for the award, if the player has accumulated in prior major league seasons:
* Fewer than 130 at bats or
* Fewer than 50 innings pitched
* Fewer than 45 days on the active roster, excluding time on the disabled list, in military service, or time when the rosters are expanded (currently after September 1)
It was not until the late 1950s that whom was a rookie was defined and the criteria has changed twice. During the 1960s, players were not considered rookies if they had more than 75 at bats or 45 innings pitched in previous seasons or were on the active roster at any time from May 15 to September 1. The current criteria were established in the 1970s.

No voter may vote for more than three players. The votes and their placement are tallied for each player are tallied and a point system is used to determine the award winner. Each first place vote is worth five points, each second place vote is worth three points, and each third place vote is worth one point. The player with the highest point total is the Rookie of the Year.
