That's cool and everything, but Ichiro did have the benefit of entering the league in his prime.

I wonder what the record for most hits in a 10 year stretch is; wouldn't shock me at all if Ichiro winds up holding that one as well.

Waner's first 10 seasons covered his age 23-32 seasons; Ichiro's first 9 have covered 27-35. So Waner had more pre-prime years, Ichiro has had more of what would normally be considered post-prime.

I never entirely understood why Paul Waner's brother Lloyd is also in the HOF

Way too many hitters from that era are in the Hall. He was famous as "Little Poisen" and the Pirates were good back then and he had high batting averages and he was a good CFer. He was about as good as Ray Lankford or Chet Lemon according to the Bill James Historical Abstract.

This isn't Phillies related, or player related, but it is baseball related.
I read today that longtime Reds beat writer Hal McCoy is going to be cut loose by his newspaper, The Dayton Daily News, after this season because the paper won't cover the Reds the same way. I have no idea if that means they'll use AP copy or staff only home games, but this is a loss in so many ways.
The man was a Hall of Famer who was still more than capable of doing his job, who brought 37 years of institutional knowledge to his writing. And the idiots in charge of Dayton's paper have taken that voice away from readers, have given them one fewer reason to buy a paper.
There are so many joys of following baseball, and one of them is the kind of kinship you develop for announcers and writers. As if the Reds weren't horrid enough, following them will become worse without Hal.

That is sad. I remember they had him on DNL when the Reds were in town, and cut him off after about two minutes because they had to give a "CSN Alert" about Pedro. They never went back to the interview. It's a shame, because I wanted to listen to what the guy had to say, because it was going to be interesting regardless of how important it was. Oh well.

Sucks about McCoy. I always thought it kind of funny that the most respected Reds beat writer was from 45 miles away.

On a happier note, Jimmy's got his OPS over .700 for the first time this season. It's amazing considering it was .569 as recently as July 1.

Cole Hamels might be the Phillies' fourth best starting pitcher at this exact moment.

John Mayberry's AB/HR rate is 13.25. If he did that over a whole career instead of 53 ABs he'd be 4th all time.

Brewers designated LHP R.J. Swindle for assignment.

Swindle had allowed a run in each of his six outings, making him the Cal Ripken of terrible relief pitching.

I have to admit that if the Phillies traded for Billy Wagner, I'd be at least sort of okay with it. He was always unshirted hell on lefty hitters, and even post-surgery I have to believe he might be better than Romero or Eyre.

Wagner was a really good pitcher before he got hurt of course. But Eyre and Romero are pretty good vs. lefties.

Romero has hardly pitched this year but his opponent OPS vs. lefties from '06 thru '08 was .601; .645; and .346. Eyre has been .664 and .630 over the last two seasons.

The Red Sox have reportedly designated John Smoltz for assignment. This has been reported by Terry Francona on a WEEI interview and by Amalie Benjamin via Twitter.

John Smoltz was apparently upset by the move and left the team without cleaning out his locker.
