RealKen:

If the Braves are getting Jake Peavy, it's news to them.

The Braves are on the verge of a trade agreement with the Padres for Peavy, according to CBSSportsline.com, but the Padres have yet to communicate their acceptance of a Braves' offer to Atlanta officials, major-league sources say.

Escobar is really good. I guess Khalil is gone? Reyes couldn't throw a beach ball over home plate. Morton is more garbage, and Hernandez obviously could turn out to be really good. That being said, this is the Santana trade all over again. Just giving away good pitching for crap. How does this stuff happen?

Until I see the finalized deal, I won't judge.

According to the East Valley Tribune, the Diamondbacks have received inquiries about Eric Byrnes, but are still likely to keep him.
A trade would almost certainly involve the Diamondbacks taking another bad contract in return, and the team believes that Byrnes is a better bet for 2009 than the veterans who could be offered for him (Luis Castillo, Adam Eaton and Julio Lugo could be a few possibilities). It seems unlikely, but perhaps a team looking to bring in one of the Diamondbacks' younger players could take on Byrnes' contract instead of giving up a quality player in return.

Zikes!

I'd hope we could find better options for LF than Jeff Spicoli.

Subquestion, how come it never happens to the Phillies? Really though, so what. I hate to have to face Peavy interdivision but the Braves still won't score any runs. I mean other than McCann and Chipper who is there?

Sadly, I'll take Eaton for one more year instead of Byrnes for 2 @ 11 each. Even assuming that Charlie is the messiah, Byrnes has never been anything other than average at his best. I don't think it's a good idea to pay an average player 11 million.

Nervousness about tangling with Ken Williams again aside... I wonder what it would take for the Phils to get Jermaine Dye.

(Other than Abreu, I mean.)

How about Eaton and Jenkins for Byrnes? That's 14M in 09 for 11 in 09 and 11 in 10. Figure the budget FA signing LF in 10 would otherwise make at least 5M, then you more or less break even.

I'd say the Thome-for-Rowand+ deal was at least a draw. But yeah the Garcia deal was just a Crisco-free buggering.
