I think if they wait it out they will get around a four year $100 million deal.

Manny's options on his old contract were for 20M a year so I'd say offering him less money would be a lowball offer.

The offer is 2 years 45M or 3 years 60M, how is that lower than 2 years 40M?

The link above said 37.5M over two years with a third year option

Citing a source close to the negotiations, the Times reported that Ramirez would earn $15 million next season, $22.5 million in 2010 and the same in 2011 if the team exercised its option. The final year can be bought out for $7.5 million.

Right, so if they buy out the 3rd year, that makes it 2 years and 45 mil.

But but but the Dodgers are renaming Chavez Ravine Dodgertown & generating a smelly dirtpile of bad PR over it.

Manny should not want to be a Dodgers if he reads this (warning: gratuitous & misleading Cantu reference):

NYTimes wrote:Some Fret Over New 'Dodgertown' in L.A.

Next spring, when a city's fancy turns to baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers will take the field in a neighborhood newly christened Dodgertown. But Rachel Cantu and others who once lived there won't be celebrating. The area's former residents will be marking the 50th anniversary of when the last families were driven out of a close-knit, largely Hispanic neighborhood they knew as Chavez Ravine. They were tossed out to make way for a new major league ballpark that would be called Dodger Stadium....

...''It was one of the most bald-faced, trick-bag things ever done in a city. It was absolutely nauseating,'' said musician Ry Cooder, whose acclaimed 2005 album ''Chavez Ravine'' recounts the area's history....

..'People who lived there would bury their babies' umbilical cords in the dirt there, that's how much the land meant to them,''...50-year-old actor-filmmaker [Ira Angustain] said, his voice cracking with emotion....

I'll grant you that sort of thing probably gives an infielder more to think about than an outfielder but still
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

According to the Phils' site, Amaro has begun negotiating with Moyer, with an apparent 50-50 chance of having the deal done by Friday. Moyer wants a multi-year deal according to Mandel.

I'm not sure I like the idea that Moyer wants a multi-year deal. Only 3 pitchers in history have thrown 100 or more innings in their age 46 season though Phil Niekro also did it in his age 47 and 48 season. While Niekro did manage 200+ innings in his 46 and 47 seasons, I'm not sure I like giving a guy guaranteed money to do what only ONE pitcher in the history of baseball has done.

I would love signing him to a very incentive based contract though.

Seems like a simple solution.

1 year deal, 8M, with a vesting option for 2010 (9M) if he logs 175 IP in 2008. If he sucks and cant get batters out this year, its unlikely he'll just hang on. If hes healthy and getting guys out, its not likely he's going to be any different next year than this year.

Was anything about his 2008 fluky though? I noticed he only gave up 20 HR compared to 30 the year before

We have all the leverage with Moyer. If Amaro refuses to apply it, it's not a good sign. If he does, I'm encouraged.

According to the East Valley Tribune, the Diamondbacks have received inquiries about Eric Byrnes, but are still likely to keep him.
A trade would almost certainly involve the Diamondbacks taking another bad contract in return, and the team believes that Byrnes is a better bet for 2009 than the veterans who could be offered for him (Luis Castillo, Adam Eaton and Julio Lugo could be a few possibilities). It seems unlikely, but perhaps a team looking to bring in one of the Diamondbacks' younger players could take on Byrnes' contract instead of giving up a quality player in return.

I don't know about Byrnes. I think Milton Bradley might be a better (and cheaper) alternative.
