I really didn't think the A's had 13 mil to spend on Holliday. Oh well, if true it's better than him staying in the NL.

So Holliday will have about 18 homers in Oakland?

Interesting. Maybe Beane is just picking him up so he can trade him to Amaro and pillage our farm system some more.

I bet that Holliday is dealt again in July for a better package than the A's gave up.

...or he realizes his division is very winnable.

The A's have one of the best farm systems in baseball after their re-stocking last year. They are deep in young outfielders and pitching, which is probably what Colorado is targeting.

A's in mix for Rockies Matt Holliday

In addition to the Cardinals, Oakland showed the strongest interest in Matt Holliday last week during the annual gathering of general managers. A's general manager Billy Beane said last week he has some payroll room to add a run-producing corner outfielder, which would mean Holliday could fit in the A's budget. Philadelphia had shown interest in Holliday during the 2008 season but did not discuss him with the Rockies last week. The Rockies were interested in outfielder Shane Victorino, whom the Phillies indicated is no longer available. Boston, Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees also are known to have had interest in Holliday, whom the Rockies made available after deciding they would not be able to agree with him on a contract extension. -- Rocky Mountain News

If he was traded to the A's, my guess for the package is

Cardenas
Ryan Sweeney
Henry Rodriguez
Andrew Carnigan

OMG :!:

Manuel wants Phils to add Manny?

Charlie Manuel fired third base coach Steve Smith after the season and is pretty open concerning his desire to obtain Manny Ramrez. The cost might be prohibitive, but never underestimate the Phillies' ability to go after a player they want. They offered Mike Lowell a four-year deal last offseason. With new general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. taking over for Pat Gillick, the Phillies might be more apt to go along with Manuel's wishes. "I think Manny is in the best shape that I've ever seen him in," Manuel said. "His lower body is very strong. His legs are strong. You can tell by the way he hits and the way he moves around in the outfield. He's got a lot of baseball left in him." -- Boston Globe

Do you think Beane actually thinks he can be out the Angels? I agree its a good trade for the Rockies [depending on who's announced] I just dont think signing Holliday passed this year can anyway help the A's in their current financial situation.

The A's have some payroll flexibility.

They likely don't care about Holliday after this year. Beane will take the 2 draft picks when he leaves.

OK you know more about this than i do, but with the 4 players you mentioned in your previous post is that equal to Holliday for 1 year and 2 picks.

Well. Cardenas is a legit starter. Sweeney is a fringy outfielder, probably a 4th OF, but he seems to fit Colorado's mold. Rodriguez has big upside but is coming off arm surgery. Carnigan is a reliever. So the A's would be getting a legit starter at a position of need (2B), a decent outfielder with some upside, a live arm, and a 7th inning reliever. Thats a good return for a guy they are going to lose in a year. And all of those guys would be cost controlled and a lot cheaper than guys like Ludwick or Schumaker.
