Romero + Lidge for Wright. I'm not sure I wouldn't do that. I'm not sure the Mets would turn it down out of hand either, not with the trouble they've had in their bullpen.

There's something about that deal that I think would intrigue Omar Minaya, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Even though it will never happen (at least via trade) I would wet my pants if Wright is a Phillies.

It could be part of the Mets' facelift I guess:

Dye is 6 years older. Their average RC/27 for their careers is almost identical. The 2009 Bill James projections have them at about the same production level. Production levels being equal, I'd much rather have the younger player. On top of that Swisher is among the most useful players in the game: a switch hitter who hits from both sides of the plate and someone who can play 4 defensive positions.

For further evidence for Swisher, please check out the "Hotties" thread.

I'd probably prefer Swisher on balance (and yeah, his scalding hot gf haunts my dreams). His Swiss Army knife defensive utility is a big plus, as is the cost certainty. But is he even available? And would he actually cost more than Dye given relative youth and expense? I know he's coming off a down year and it's always great to buy low, but Williams is probably too smart to sell low unless something really great is coming back.

Swisher is the type of guy I'd like to see the Phils get. Young; can play pretty good defense in the OF; some patience; some power; not really expensive. Good combination there.

I just have concerns about a guy who has a real stinker of a season in the middle of their prime. Obviously, this is a good thing if it means you get him cheap and it turns out his bad year was an aberration. But if he turns into Ben Grieve then you need another outfielder.

BAHAHAHA.

If you called Minaya right now and said "We'll trade you Chase Utley for David Wright" he'd say yes and hang up the phone as quick as possible so you couldn't change your mind.

Utley's D at 2B makes him more valuable than Wright.

one is friends with Reyes, too

If it took Lidge plus Romero or whoever to get Wright, that would probably make the team better, but I don't think I'd like it. I'd miss him.

Wright was a good major league player at 21 and an outstanding one at 22. He's been a great player for four straight years and he'll be 26 next year. That is huge. That's what Hall of Famers do. He was better than Rollins in 2007 and had the Mets won the division he would have probably been MVP.

Utley was 26 before he established himself as a great player. He plays the middle infield and Wright mans a corner so that makes Utley more valuable right now. Utley also had a monster defensive year if you have faith in the Dewan +/- ratings. For some reason, my access to the Dewan stats just went blooey so I can't check Wright but he is a very fine defender -- not as good as Utley, but very good as I recall.

Despite Wright's big age advantage I wouldn't want the Phils to trade Utley for him. It's probably not provable in any way, shape or form but I don't think it's good for teams to trade a guy like Utley even for a guy who might very well have a longer, better career.

This trade wouldn't happen since Frank Lane is dead but it's kinda fun to talk about.

EDIT: Got in. Dewan's system is not really kind to Wright. He's been ranked 29th; 6th and 16th in the last three seasons with -11; +13 and +3 scores. He is hurt by bad "going to his right" scores. He is, according to this system, outstanding at fielding bunts. I think it's safe to say he is a good defensive player at least.

Feel like I read that he hit in terrible luck this year--line drive percentage was steady, but his BABIP somehow plunged under .250. That doesn't mean he couldn't turn into Grieve, but it's worth considering.

Oh yeah. I think Swisher is a good player who just had a bad year. Normally, that is exactly the kind of guy you trade for I think. I think he's a good option for the Phils if he doesn't cost too much.

Swisher saw 4.51 pitches per plate appearance in 2008. That's incredible. Highest output this decade for a qualified hitter. I love Swisher.

*Just for a crazy comparison to put this into perspective. In 2004 when Barry Bonds walked 232 times, he saw 3.93 P/PA.
