Some kind of Marson, Werth, Eaton for Manny deal? I can't even wrap my head around that.

I think Marson, Victorino/Werth, and Carrasco is more likely. Dude, let's be real. Nobody is taking Eaton.

That's way too much. Way too much.

It's Manny Ramirez. Of course it's going to be a lot.

Red Sox are talking about paying Manny's salary in order to get a better return. Taking Eaton is paying a ton of salary.

The Sox have intimated they'd pay Manny's ~$6MM salary for the rest of the year in order to get prospects included. So, if the Phils were willing to take on Manny's salary, it's not too great a stretch to think the Phils would have some leverage to get them to take Eaton's contract. If not Eaton, then maybe Jenkins. I don't get the feeling money is the big issue for the Sox. They seem to want most to get some talent back for Manny and are willing to take something of a financial hit to do it.

That said, I'd do everything I could not to include Marson. Give them Werth (you'll need Vic to run balls down between Pat and Manny), Happ, Carrasco and insist they take either Eaton or Jenkins. That might not be enough but, if it isn't, then I'd pass. It's not exactly a seller's market for the Sox.

If we take Manny off their hands for 2 months, there's not a ton going back. I'd venture to say that if there's more than fringe prospects going to Boston, it would be a ripoff. If Jimmy Rollins is going to Boston, they better also take Eaton off our hands and give us a couple prospects, probably including Lowrie or a high level pitcher.

Agreed. If we're going to get this thread to 100 pages we need to juice it.

The Mets were trying to downplay their interest in Manny Ramirez, but an official with one of the teams involved said the Mets and the Phillies were both in serious pursuit of the goofy Red Sox slugger.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the delicacy of the negotiations, said a deal was probably too complicated to get completed before Thursday's deadline.

[snip]

The Phillies may have the edge with [catching prospect Lou] Marson, as Boston is looking for catching help in 2009 and beyond. But Ramirez may be an enticing enough target that the Mets would start talking about prospects that have so far been off-limits -- players such as Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese and Robert Parnell.

As of last night, it was believed that four teams had spoken to the Red Sox, all from the National League: the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Sox could be reluctant to deal Ramirez to another American League team out of fear that he could help keep them from reaching the postseason, or once there, block their path to the World Series.

[...]

The Sox, however, are said to have gotten assurances that Ramirez would be willing to waive his right to refuse the deal if he’s given an assurance that his new team will decline his option for 2009, making him eligible for free agency this winter.

At a time like this I wish they still had Cardenas as a piece to move.

I don't think Cardenas one way or the other would be a critical piece in this kid of move.
