You may remember the flap about the citizenship question, but there were other problems with Trump's administration simply not doing the preparation normally considered an important part of the Census. Of course, the census occurs in April, and the mailings did go out and people were able to complete it. But as always, lots of people didn't. (It probably varies a lot, but it's looking like 50-60% of households have completed the census.) Lil' Vulture was in fact hired in February to work as an enumerator, a job that was supposed to start in May. But it does not look like any of the field activities or even the distribution of literature house to house is going to happen this summer. (It was supposed to start in May.) Even given Covid-19, the whole thing seems massively disorganized and poorly run.

So his priority for the 2nd term is to not bomb all of us. That's comforting. I guess he'll just continue to kill us all slowly, then.

@BillKristol

Trump has cancelled his trip to his New Jersey country club this weekend, so will presumably be at the White House. If memory serves, President Johnson made his surprise announcement that he wouldn't seek renomination or reelection in 1968 on a Sunday night, from the White House.

True, which among other things proves some things about latent sexism: Palin was widely regarded as a joke, Trump is President of the United States.

Trump was/is just as big of a joke, though, just (unfortunately) a more effective one in the end. IMO that was a big reason he did end up getting elected - nobody took his candidacy seriously until, well, he won the election.

It also helped that he was given free reign of the talk shows and was rarely challenged on anything he said. He was awash in free publicity. He's a creation of the media, which makes it funny that he complains about the very thing that created him. Fake news! Yeh, like your whole life, jackass.

But the Democrats have a secret weapon in 2020 on the other side of the age spectrum: senior voters. Among this age group — voters 65 and older — polls so far this year reveal a dramatic shift to the Democrats. That could be the most consequential political development of this election.

The bipartisan States of Change project estimates that Mrs. Clinton lost this group by around 15 points. By contrast, the nonpartisan Democracy Fund + U.C.L.A. Nationscape survey, which has collected over 108,000 interviews of registered voters since the beginning of the year, has Mr. Biden leading among seniors by about six points. We are looking at a shift of over 20 points in favor of the Democrats among a group that should be at least a quarter of voters in 2020. That’s huge.

Makes sense. All Trump has done is throw two middle fingers up at them while this virus ravages their demographic while consistently throwing age-related insults at Biden.

Imagine if the GOP lost these voters permanently. I mean, they really should lose old people since they do nothing for them beyond platitudes about the men who served in the military. The GOP would happily take away their healthcare, pensions, social security, and other safety nets.

I think it's interesting that the Trumpiest age group were teenagers in the late 60s and 70s.

Well , most of them hated the jobless hippies and angry blacks then, too. Liked the music, though.

Trump lives in a reality of his own creation. It's 10 times more likely that he refuses to concede defeat after losing the election than withdrawing before the election. Kristol seems to have more than his fair share of Fantasyland tweets.

If the GOP thinks he's lose and pull them down with him, they could go to him behind closed doors and tell him they are done protecting him. Trump has a history of pulling out of things, like most every business he's ever created. The problem with that idea is that he tends to screw everyone over on the way out the door. I'm not sure what a presidential version of bankruptcy and refusing to pay his bills is and I'm a little afraid to find out.

Trump disapproval rate on 538 is higher than it's been since December of 2017 at 56.1, and near record levels (approval rate is still a good bit above record lows). This is unequivocally a good thing, but I'll equivocate anyway since it it sets up the narrative of him gaining in polls and popularity if he rebounds even slightly.

I forget the saying about the blind dog eating his turd or something, but gotta give trump some props on Bolton. That motherfucker straight up likes his bombs. If you would’ve teamed him up with McCain, we probably would’ve started bombing the Canadians because we ran out of targets.

Yes. For example, how confident are any of us that Donald Trump even knows who Lyndon Johnson was, much less that he is somehow patterning himself after him?
