Fauci did speak a few minutes ago from WH in remdesivir study
-said results were positive (8% death rate vs 11% on placebo) but not yet statistically significant
-said they were announcing this now because they had an ethical duty to control/placebo group in the study to disclose this
-clarified to idiot reporter that this was treatment and had nothing to do with a vaccine (at which point trump butted in and asked birx to discuss potential J&J pipeline vaccine)
-trump glaring at him the whole time during comments

3 day total for Sun-Tuesday is 579 vs. 683 last Sun-Tuesday. It's getting better, but it is not getting better quickly.

Last Wednesday was 310. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

328

Not great!

I think the remdesivir news with the Korean false positive report today is reason for optimism.

Good article in the New Yorker on how the early stages of the outbreak were dealt with in Washington and elsewhere

Haven't made it through the full thing yet, but they early stages are filed with the same forebodings of a good horror story.

Philadelphia area 7-day average is bending upwards that doesn't appear to be because of a significant ramp-up in testing, is that correct?

yet another reason why we need testing (anti-viral drugs work better when given early). I really hope there's an investigation into this testing problem. We are acting like a 2nd world country, which maybe we are in terms of medical coverage, but there still seems to be something more than that causing our inability to ramp up testing.

Found out that my brother in law’s sister and her husband both had it last month. He was always doing Ironmans and marathons and now he can’t jog 30 seconds without getting winded.

I didn't get to check out the remdesivir study yet to see other outcomes but the small reduction in death rate isn't super exciting to me. Am I wrong to think that means we'd have 58,200 deaths instead of 60,000 if they all received remdesivir?

It is more than that. It is a big step to finding a better treatment. This is what Fauci said:

"What it has proven is that a drug can block this virus," Fauci said.

Fauci, who is normally measured in tone, expressed genuine excitement over the results, calling them "reminiscent of 34 years ago in 1986 when we were struggling for drugs for HIV."

Fauci's team uncovered the first drug to show a modest impact on the virus that causes AIDS — research that was built upon over subsequent years to find HIV drug cocktails.

Fauci’s comments are moving the market today.

That’s why trump can’t can the guy. Markets would tank.

Amazing who the general public trusts the most in all of this.

I'm really proud of my brother. He started a windshield repair business like 20+ years ago by going to local auto dealers and just doing little ping repair on cars in their lots. He'd earn $40 per fix. Then he started replacing whole windshields and rented shop space and slowly grew his business. He literally worked 7 days a week for over a decade. Never took a vacation, all while making it to all his kid's softball games and recitals. He missed a recital during his oldest daughter's senior year and it was the first thing he ever missed. Meanwhile, the business continued to grow and he got major contracts with trucking companies, etc. He then hired someone to enable him to take a day or two off per week. Then he hired a second person after his heart surgery. His business is doing really well, he basically can make as many appointments as he wants. Each week he turns down work because he's already booked solid.Part of that is the contracts and part of it is his people skills. People know he will back up his work no question and he's cheaper than the big places with tons of overhead. But all of this isn't why I'm proud of him. I mean, it is part of it, but it's not why I feel such pride right now.

During this outbreak, he's been deemed essential and can stay open. Instead, he's cut way back on his work and has taken just enough work to pay his employees. My brother has been working with no paycheck the past two months, but he has paid his employees their full wages while also cutting back on their work. He pays them well. The guys make over 50k a year working for him, which is much better than other places pay for the same work. Even though it's fairly low risk because they show up at places and usually don't interact much with people, he's still done his best to only take jobs that are as safe as possible.

Yesterday he heard that he was granted one of those loans, so he can finally take a paycheck while still paying his employees. I feel real relief for him.

Anyway, he started out being kind of a punk in high school and couldn't keep a job because he had trouble working for others. Until he started his own business, he was a bit of a fuck up, working construction jobs until he got sick of it and then just walking out. But I'm very proud of the man and father he has become. I'm sure there are many stories like his through this, but just wanted to share because I woke up with him on my mind today.

Markets are also not always rational and indices are overrepresented by large companies that can weather this and eat up smaller businesses that this virus may destroy. Long term, big business has a lot to be optimistic about!

Not talking about the treatment or anything here, just take the 'market' with a large grain of salt.
