tl;dr: everything's fine. Well, an awful lot of old people have died and will die, but that's because someone forgot to wash their hands or something. We're looking into it.

I saw the video on Twitter. It's hard to hear all the audio. Doesn't make it much better but it sounds like she starts with "Go to China if you want communism." IMO it's being framed like she's screaming "Go back to China." If that's the case it only makes fighting the idiots more difficult.

according to the photographer it was 'go back to china'.

Eyewitness testimony is unreliable :!:

More likely she said both.

Dude is Asian. I’m sure go back to China w as shouted at him at least once. Along with the other stuff. I’ve heard from friends and friends of friends about their experiences as providers in the hospitals. Early on, there were a lot of patients who refused or declined to be treated by said Asian American medical professional. These people, I guess, would rather die than take treatment from a person with yellow skin who could be in some way affiliated with Wuhan or China regardless of actual ethnic origin.

I didn't mean to minimize what's going on out there. If some idiots refused chinese takeout I can just imagine the bullshit providers (and others) deal with from these jackasses.

Nah, didn’t mean to imply anything about what you said Milt. Was just a convenient place to put my thought.

I have a Nags Head rental starting May 16 that I want to cancel, but the rental company is only going a week or 2 at a time. Travel insurance specifically doesn’t cover pandemics. I can only get a refund if the bridge is still closed to visitors. I’m guessing the chances are good, but right now they’re tentatively putting the opening date as May 15. I bet that gets pushed back until after Memorial Day, but what do you think?

In something of a watershed, the second and third most cases recorded (behind the US of course) were by Turkey and Russia, ahead of the (semi) European quartet of the UK, Spain, Italy and France. Next up is Brazil, which is finally recording more tests but still lags far behind most of the world. Then Canada, which has largely plateaued. India's positives relative to its population is still very small, but they are still sloping upward pretty steeply in daily cases.

Massive news: they've confirmed two people in California passed from the virus in early February, basically a month before the first confirmed death in Washington. And those people didn't have a travel history, which means it was spreading in the community in January at the latest.

Have to think that it was here in November/December easily through travel patterns from Asia. It was likely here before that but we have no idea what it was or that it was coming.

The ramifications of this are pretty big. There is so much anecdotal "I think I had this" dating back to the winter. My coworker lives in LA and basically assumes he and his girlfriend had it in January. She, in particular, had lost her sense of taste.

The logical part of me says "yeah, makes sense since it was in China since at least November". The very cynical part says it was leaked by the admin to say "See, it's been here since February, and nobody cared til mid-March!"

I'm in the same boat, or at least my brother is. He swears, as do they, that two friends of his exhibited all the symptoms of COVID-19 late last year but just assumed it was the flu. Loss of taste was one of their "weird" symptoms. One friend lives out west, maybe NV, and they came east (TN) to stay with my brother and his roommate for a week. The roommate got it too. Given the reports, I assume it is totally possible my brother had it as well but was asymptomatic.

It's a tough call for a few reasons.

Gubernatorial election year - As the pressure builds to reopen will Cooper cave?

SC opening will add pressure for NC to open, especially in coastal tourist areas.

In staggered openings Dare county would probably be one of the first.

If openings occurring now cause a flare we're on the borderline for those appearing before your cancellation window.

Without significant flares my instinct leans to the state opening by the 15th. What opens and what authority counties/municipalities maintain is unclear.

If this is the case there must be more deaths missed between 2/6 and 3/9.

Early on when we were learning about symptoms I said that it seemed like I might have had a mild case since I had something with all these disconnected symptoms that come together nicely on the COVID map. My wife had this mystery thing about the same time and it took her ~3x longer to get over it. Now that I see what it could be I am super hopeful that I am right and had some less virulent version.

Caught a snippet of some US official spewing the next conspiracy theory that China paid off the WHO to keep a lid on this (we already have had reporting that US assets on rotation to WHO from CDC reported back about this in December). Not sure who it was (thank to the yard blower guy on my neighbors lawn)

Just probably classified as flu or pneumonia.
