@GovLarryHogan
I’m grateful to President Trump for sending us a list of federal labs and generously offering Maryland use of them for #COVID19 testing. Accessing these federal labs will be critical for utilizing the 500,000 tests we have acquired from South Korea.

Looks interesting. No NYT access to read the whole thing. https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/statu ... 6125384706

Some of the replies! Can't believe there's people indoctrinated to the point they believe someone having a heart attack would refuse hospital care out of fear of coronavirus.

I can't find the tweet/article at the moment, but Los Angeles's antibody test shows that potential positive cases were largely uncounted. Which is both reassuring and scary. If there a lot of asymptomatic people having the antibodies their plasma can be used in treatment, and social distancing may have saved a lot more lives than initially thought since it forced "healthy" asymptomatic people home.

Found the article: https://www.latimes.com/california/stor ... -la-county

Edit: I see LA I think Louisiana because I haven’t had enough coffee yet and reading comprehension is overrated.

Probably significantly higher but that's assuming both had and have. Without an immune response (symptoms) and recovery or widespread testing can we know the difference?

I find it a little more reassuring given it means the death rate would plummet and eventually it runs out of people who can actually get it

I mean, that's presuming immunity acts like any other virus, but if it doesn't we're screwed anyway so

It's kind of good and bad news. Good that it means overall morbidity/mortality rates are lower than calculated (IF all of these exposures that created antibodies are completely protective for a while). Bad that it's much more infectious as well and even with those low rates it's enough to spread rapidly among populations and overload healthcare facilities in some instances. Possibly good in the long run I guess.

Just get more testing out there please.

I don't think there's enough detail and evidence in that testing to draw any real conclusions. I read or heard somewhere they're not even positive the antibodies are from THIS virus.

Idk, I've read differeing things on this and heard something on NPR maybe two weeks ago that they think it was happening in November in China, so people could have been travelling then with it

I don't know how that is possible, I would assume thousands of people were in China and left and if it is as contagious as it seems it would have been brought to other places.

you don't have to know. scientists do.

No, YOU (bar the first Chinese patients in Wuhan) did not have COVID19 prior to Jan 2020. The first documented cases in China were in late November/early Dec 2019. Scientists can “track” the origins of viruses by sequencing their genetic material. Over time, viruses accumulate mutations that make them identifiable. Think of family trees and tracing genetic mutations, this is very similar. See this article for a good explanation:
Most New York Coronavirus Cases Came From Europe, Genomes Show
Travelers seeded multiple cases starting as early as mid-February, genomes show. New research indicates that the…

UPDATE: If you are interested in the analysis mentioned in the NYTs article, here’s a great website that traces the sequencing data: https://nextstrain.org/ncov/global and for the US: https://nextstrain.org/narratives/ncov/ ... ountry=USA

Ok, but what about scientists that say it could have been?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/fac ... 899027001/

Experts say it's plausible that coronavirus came over to the U.S. from China before that first January case, but more testing is needed to be sure.

"Anecdotally, we've heard about some influenza-like illnesses in December and January that were a little bit atypical," said Dr. Luis Ostrosky, a professor of infectious diseases at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston. "But the thing we need to solve that puzzle is when we actually start doing testing of antibodies, not just detecting the virus."

Ostrosky said that would include taking a look at blood samples from December and January to see if the virus was already in circulation.

Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, said he believes when researchers do more testing, they will probably find the disease was in the U.S. earlier than first believed.

"I believe at the end of this, when we do look back – and we will – we will probably find that this disease was here earlier than we thought," he said. "We also know that when we closed our borders, it was very, very leaky."

There was another article that said even though China thinks the first case was in November it actually could have been in September. I think we are finding out these scientists just have to take educated guesses with this stuff just like the weather.

In looking more specifically at the NYT metro area tracker the DC metro area seems to be an example of slow and steady to win the race, unfortunately we are still in a slow climb so I have to think that we have a long way to go.
