I think it speaks volumes that the DOW 30 was down over 2,000 pts yesterday, the day after Trump gave his prime-time speech.

I just don't know what country did a good job. People will say South Korea but some of the things South Korea did would not fly in the US.

Not sure it's good v bad. It's better v worse. The US has done worse than just about every other nation dealing with this thing.

All three classify as foreign for the President and his base.

The big problem is the lack of enough testing kits--decisions makers simply lack information that could lead them to deploy limited resources in ways that would make a difference.

The second issue I think is that we do seem to be seeing state and local decision makers stepping into a vacuum by the absence of leadership from the feds. But their actions aren't coordinated, and again, they lack the resources of the federal government. As consequences things that could have been done sooner and had a bigger impact have been delayed.

One big difference between us and some of these other countries is we have 50 states that all handle things differently and we have citizens that don't like to be mandated to do anything. Other countries don't have those problems.

It's definitely been mishandled with the lack of test kits and all the other Trump stuff but I think just as a country we are always going to be at a disadvantage to handle this stuff compared to smaller countries.

Comparing the USA with the 3rd largest population and 3rd largest land size to a country like Denmark or Germany doesn't seem like apples to apples.

I absolutely agree that it isn't apples to apples; which is why, rather than ho-humming the situation for over a month, the administration should have recognized that it was a matter of WHEN not IF the virus was going to reach our shores and start to put a plan into place.

also a huge difference is this is something that surfaced in china, so it took them a while to realize what they were dealing with. we had plenty of advance notice.

Didn't see this one coming.

@MiamiHerald
BREAKING: Andrew Gillum was discovered by police at a South Beach hotel early Friday in a room with bags of possible methamphetamine and in the company of a man who appeared to have overdosed on drugs, according to a police report.

That Herald tweet is so poorly worded. It makes it sound like he was found with the drugs and not that he was simply in the same room.

Good commentary here - https://www.gq.com/story/trump-oval-off ... s-pandemic

Some 63 million Americans voted for a man who wanted to smash the system to smithereens, either because they felt it wasn’t doing enough for them or because breaking glass just feels so primitively satisfying. Or maybe it's because the Republican Party has been peddling a dystopian anarchistic anti-government pipe dream to them for the last four decades.

Now, it turns out, a functioning government is a good thing to have when a global pandemic arrives on your shores. It turns out that maybe reforming an imperfect system is wiser than just taking a sledgehammer to it, better to trust people who have dedicated their lives to being public servants than trashing them in favor of a one-man, megalomaniacal savior, better to have a functioning system than dancing on its rubble while crowing about the death of the “deep state”—or “the political establishment.”

Kelly opens up double-digit lead against McSally in Arizona Senate race

I don’t like sending money to non-local races, but I might just send funds to Kelly.

The numbers out of AZ today were very bad for Republicans.

Of course sometimes that lining is just the raw, festering flesh of patronage jobs. Our county government's webpage is just full of outdated, anodyne assurances about it being less dangerous than the flu and zero information about how or when to get tested

The deceptive editing led Twitter to apply its new “manipulated media” label to a tweet for the first time.

Sean Hannity of Fox News highlighted a speech Biden gave in 1973 to the City Club of Cleveland. Hannity claimed that Biden referred to African Americans with “a horrible, degrading word” in the speech, and the network bleeped it out. The implication was that Biden used the “n-word.”

But the word Biden used was “Negro.” The word may seem archaic or obsolete now, but is it really so offensive that it needs to be bleeped out? Some organizations, such as the United Negro College Fund and the National Council of Negro Women, still use it as part of their names. Negro was commonly used in the 1960s by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and other early civil rights era leaders.

Looks like we're on again. House did pass their bill last night which Trump says he'll sign.
