Interesting

Don't confuse that with "there is no need"

But if it takes a week to negotiate it from a Trump bailout to a genuine boost for ordinary Americans, time well spent

Understood; let me try this one more time.

The pain of waiting a week to negotiate is less pain than a bailout that bails out Trump and leaves the regular citizen with a sham bailout.

Hasn't nearly every state waived waiting weeks for unemployment? I know it's not full income but people should be able to make rent and mortgage payments until more support arrives. Nearly every lender is working with people on due dates as well.

Brings me to a conundrum. Listened to an restaurant owner interviewed yesterday. She talked about servers who make 1000 bucks a week in tips only getting $90 in unemployment. They were obviously under-reporting their tips right? In part I'm sympathetic because $90 is nothing but at the same time if they weren't cheating they wouldn't be in the situation.

Wasn’t this stimulus proposed late last week? The emergency package wasn’t passed this quickly and it was much smaller and had trump approval before it even got to the senate’s desk. Seems like things are moving relatively quickly.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

It's going to get done today and it will be better but not perfect by any means. Still shocking to me that they're going off of 2018 tax returns and giving just $1,200 to most americans and less than half for children. Needs to be more money and more widespread with automatic triggers for second rounds. I make decent money and I'm bunkering because I'm somewhat scared of losing my jobs. Even a small amount to me would make me more willing to try and spend more locally.

Agreed. $1,200 isn't even a rent payment in most places. Assuming no receipt of outstanding receivables, my company probably runs out of cash by the end of April so I am definitely getting a little nervous.

Re unemployment: people going paycheck to paycheck (even those in the middle class) could probably not pay rent or mortgage in most states. It's 330 a week in Delaware. That's not covering rent in an apartment. Let alone food and gas. It's absurd.

Tipped wages: this is why I believe that there should be a flat amount given to everyone regardless of income and location and freeze all debts. Like 5m Americans work on tips. There's no way you're gonna be able to give them enough money.

Just looked at max unemployment in each state. I had no idea they were that low. $235 in Mississippi!

We should start a new political party where we insist that waiters, busboys, and bartenders pay their fair share of taxes. We can use the money to build that wall.

I think the smarter move was a narrow bill focused only on getting money in people's hands. Guaranteed income replacement for displaced workers and a smaller stimulus check.

After that they could argue over everything else.

Pelosi's approach is smart. Stack it with a Progressive Wish List; those are bargaining chips to use to carve out a bailout plan that puts more money into the hands of oridnary citizens and less into a Mnuchin slush fund to bail out Trump and Trump cronies.

Dems have ALL the leverage here. There is no urgent need for a bailout package; let the GOP stew and fret and make them come to your terms.

“So my democratic reps are holding up my ability to pay for food and shelter over voting items that mean nothing to my ability to survive?”

Leverage? Dem states hit WAY HARDER than Republican states. So if by leverage you mean forcing people back out of their homes only leading to more infections and deaths then yeah, fine. Leverage.

Now isn’t the time for this shit. Plain and simple.

I get where you're coming from, but when this bill doesn't go far enough, do you really think the Republicans will come back with more robust worker protections (paid sick leave, job protection during any quarantine/stay at home periods) or more money per month to families to help cover costs?

There is probably only one shot at this bill, and rolling over on huge corporate slush fund and scraps for the rest of Americans is also not good.

$50K cash is a $10,000 bump over paying tax (not saying that is exactly what goes on here because that would be reporting $0 which you would absolutely be called on). I know that it has been played with occasionally in the US, but giving these folks a living wage and skipping the tip would be a god outcome. It puts everyone into an easy lane. The restaurant would not be super keen on it because part of the game we play is that we buy food for $X, and we give a tip as expected VS the price going up some 20%. That fixes the reporting issue as well.

I suspect many of you have read that trained chefs are working the front of the house at high end restaurants because the pay is so much better up front. That is pointing at a different problem in the pay equity problem.

I didn’t realize they were doing the Coronabucks calculation based on 2018 tax returns if you didn’t file 2019 yet (which makes perfect sense, I don’t know why I didn’t realize that). I made way more in 2019 and haven’t filed yet.

I went from not expecting any Coronabucks to now expecting to get the full amount.

Republicans: You and your loved ones should be ready to die for the cause of the investment portfolios of the wealthy, uh, excuse me, I meant continued economic growth. I've heard this fish tank cleaner cures coronavirus. Eat it!

Democrats: Can we get more cash in the hands of Americans, put conditions on the bailouts to airlines, and ensure this election in November is fair and free?
