2nd son got his permit today

Feeling even more anxious than last time as I know how nerve racking it is and this one has no fear

I’ve been tasked with taking care of my nephews this weekend through Tuesday as my sister and brother in law visit NYC. My sister is very much a helicopter parent, so my nephews are really enjoying my rather laissez faire approach to guardianship. Also, the only time there’s been any disagreement between the three of them has been when my sister has called to “check in” on them. Parenting is easy.

8, 10, and 15. Obviously the 15 year old really doesn't need me around, but the other two are pretty much self sufficient as well, other than needing to be told to shower, etc.

I've seen Uncle buck. This ends well, but it's pretty hairy for a while.

I'm sure TV and Cyclone are in the middle of this too, but the sending a kid to college is a beast. Its like a part time job to check all the boxes, and do all the work. Wherever we are, we are always clearly behind. Then there are requirements that make me insane like a demand to fill out financial aid forms when I know that the baseline DC economy, home ownership, and god forbid having a 401K are all disqualifying events. Where I get need based, especially since the costs are astounding, but why demand that I present my lack of qualification for aid? While sticker price might not be sticker at many schools, F&M, as an example, in Lancaster is over $50K/year. Its $20K less to go to UVA in state. One is private and the other public, but that discrepancy is substantial.

Lil' Vulture is a Jr, so we're not doing the heavy financial aid stuff yet. And she's been pretty on top of signing up for the tests and things, though not so on top of actually preparing for them.

She's got a first choice picked out, and she has her safety school. Now she just needs a few schools in between.

By the way--I'm not entirely sure that homeownership is a disqualifying event--schools I think calculate that differently, and I'm a bit surprised your 401k is considered in your financial aid--it's not like you can really touch that money yet.

It's not a bribe anymore, it's called positive reinforcement.

My daughter (a senior) just beat my SAT scores. She texted me her score report, with "HAHAHAHAHAHA", and I responded "congrats, and fuck off, too."

Parenting is great.

Lil vulture filled her car up with gas today. Pumped it herself. And paid for it too.
