Whaddya goin' do with these kids these days? (parenting)

I agree with swish on this, that trying to find some other activity that might expose her to another peer group might help.

Our oldest struggled mightily with fitting in and trying too hard to get people to like him. There wasn't anyone in the neighborhood his age that would accept him.

Vox started taking him to Friday Night Magic and that was the key -- it was a combination of finding him something he was good at AND finding a peer group that was interested in similar things that got him over the hurdle.

I realize that there's also a huge difference between 6 and 12, but computers are really helping kids break down distance walls and communicate with one another. Our oldest and his friends don't even go to the same schools anymore, but they skype with one another, and even include friends that have moved away to other states.

This board can certainly relate to having some internet friends.

Thanks also to swish and MrsVox.

A new place opened in town offering all kinds of programs for kids (and adults). Once I get a position somewhere (we're a bit broke and the programs are pricey), I think we'll try to get her involved in something there. At the old place, she did dance and tennis and made some additional friends that way. Having an entry point with the other kids would certainly help. Maybe we can also set up a skype call this weekend with her best friend from the old place

Home with my sick daughter, I’d kill for Moana, she’s obsessed with this Disney show called Jessie. I hate it.

My daughter digs the Octonauts. A few weeks ago...

Her: The red rock crab likes to eat algae off a marine iguana by riding on his back like he's a horse. The iguana gets clean and the crab gets food. That's symbiosis!

I mention this partly because of the conversation, but also because then this happened three days ago. I was telling her that I don't like to wear things with Gap and Aeropostale (or anything else) on it because I feel like I'm paying them to be an advertisement. Her response was....

Her: Hey, you give them money and advertise their stuff and you get something to wear. That's symbiosis!

Me:  .............

Yeah, that show is pretty awful. The spinoff, Bunk'd, is bad too

Booo.

She's moved onto Zootopia and Sing, which she refers to as "bunny" (Zootopia main character) and "doggy" (What she calls the Matthew McConaughey--?!--koala main character), respectively.

I'm happy though because I had nearly memorized the entire Moana soundtrack, including the Polynesian language parts

What's with the sick kids. Toddler sat in the living with a bucket all day. Trying to wean him off YouTube - he likes the preschooler cartoons with cars and trucks and trains that teach letters and numbers and colors, but the decent ones eventually lead to the ones made in russia with computer voices.

I'd love to get him to watch movies, but he seems to hate them.

My son had 13 and 9 in his first college start. Under-sized D3 center. Jesus, kids playing D3 are a lot bigger than I remember them being 30 years ago.

I could watch this level of basketball all day long.

File under WTF. My younger son slides into the bathroom while the older one is showering and take a shit.

Totally wrong, but sort of funny (if it does not happening to you). there were 3 other open bathrooms.

Can't get this fucking kid to put herself to sleep. Have had to rock her for the first year (at first for medical reasons, then to just get her to sleep). I know it's our fault, but, we are where we are...

Cry it out seems harsh. Halp!

We used that for all three kids and they all became good to great (ie, 11-13 hours a night) sleepers by seven months. I can PM details if you're interested.

Another thing I think is huge is routine -- same bedtime every night, same sleep sack and/or stuffed animal, one book, one song, good night. We missed out on a ton of social opportunities for us and the kids, but knowing for a fact your duties are over at 7 is game changing.

The man speaks truth. It's not harsh to have your child gain the ability to put themselves to sleep.

Also it's shocking how quickly they adapt to it (for my three, at least). Like two or three nights of less than an hour crying, in ten minute intervals.
