FNTC. No such restrictions with Lee, though.

Or you could move Lee who doesn't have a NTC.

I'd offer Toronto Happ, Taylor, Gose, Correa and May for Halladay. It may be the best offer they get by far, and then worry about the money situation at the end of the year. If you need to move guys, you can easily find teams to take on either Halladay or Lee, or even a guy like Werth.

Well for one Halladay has a no-trade clause in his contract. If he waives it to come here, the provision doesn't go away its still in his contract so he'd have to agree to the 2nd trade too I think.

If he waives it to be traded the first time, he can't get it back.

Our trade was great regardless, but it will certainly take a little wind out of my sails if the Dodgers (who I see as NLCS opponent) get Halladay.

I'm not sure about that.

Rolen waived his NTC to go from the Cards to the Jays and every article I've read says he still has a full NTC if the Jays want to deal him.

I think there's a difference between the 5/10 rule and contractual NTCs.

Agree.

In Rolen's case, when he signed with the Cards, they gave him a FNTC. He got into a fued with Larussa and waived it to go to Toronto for Glaus. If GMAN is correct, then Rolen would lose his FNTC because he already invoked it.

All the articles I read said he still has a FNTC. Now, those could easily be wrong, but it's all I could find.

I'm almost certain that when a player who has a NTC is traded, you are acquiring the contract as is, including the NTC, which remains in effect. Obviously, once a 10-5 guy is traded he is no longer a 10-5 guy.

I agree with this. If you waive your NTC, I can't imagine you've given it up for the duration of the contract. It doesn't make sense. What stops an acquiring team from turning around and dealing you immediately after a trade? "I won't go to the Blue Jays". OK - then I'll trade you to the Reds who will then turn around and deal you to the Blue Jays? Something doesn't jive.

Yes, I think the confusion may be over so-called "Repeater Rights" under the MLB CBA and has to do with:

(a) "Any Player who has 5 or more years of Major League service at the time of the assignment of his contract and whose contract was executed prior to October 23, 2006 and covers the next succeeding season;" and

(b) Whose "contract with the signing Club contains a no-trade provision which limits the signing Club’s right to assign the Player’s contract to no more than sixteen (16) Clubs designated or subsequently to be designated by the Player."

If a player who qualifies requests a trade or free agency, he cannot exercise that right again "until he has completed an additional 3 years of Major League service."

BTW, if he requests a trade or free agency, he loses his Moving Allowance.

It occurred to me this morning that Smuggles could now turn around and offer Lee + Happ to Toronto for Halladay.

I wouldn't do it, but then again I wouldn't take Happ out of the rotation to spare Moyer's feelings. From a Phillies perspective, Halladay probably more than equals Lee plus Happ-the-reliever.

Is this a good idea? Would Toronto accept it? (They get some cost savings, plus Happ, and could still trade Lee this winter or next season.)
