How does a team exactly come close to making a deal, but then become unclose?

they thought they were trading for someone else?

Rangers: We'll give you Smoak and Holland.
JP: Oh, almost, but we're going to need a little more, that's really close.
Rangers: How about Smoak and Padilla?
JP: We're done here.

Sources told FOXSports.com that the Jays are holding out for Derek Holland, Justin Smoak and two more prospects from the Rangers in a Roy Halladay deal.

They settled on the players, but the Rangers asked for cash.

At least we got to witness the career suicides of two GM's this week instead of just the one (Minaya).

Dodgers looking for more bullpen help — 11:55 a.m.

The Dodgers no longer are talking to the Blue Jays about ace right-hander Roy Halladay, and they're also unlikely to get Jays right-handed reliever Jason Frasor, according to a major-league source.

The Jays are listening on all fronts until the 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline. The Dodgers, looking for bullpen help even after adding left-hander George Sherrill on Thursday, have inquired on Frasor.

The source, however, indicated that the teams did not have a match.

Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said Friday that he expects Roy Halladay to stay in Toronto, at least through the 2009 season.
Ricciardi was disappointed by most of the offers presented to him. "I think it has taken a long time for people to figure out how serious we have been (about the high asking price)," he said. "If you put your house up for sale and it is a $1 million house, you are not accepting $800,000. I have the best pitcher in baseball, I should be overwhelmed."

Except that if like 10 people offer you 800k, and everyone laughs when you ask for a million, perhaps, just maybe, your asking price is above what the market will bear. I dunno, just me.

I think JP will leave Toronto before Halladay does. He's got 3 hours left an expensive team way out of contention and hasn't closed a single deal as I can recall.
