Odubel and Roberts create a financial drag limiting the clubs total cap at about $190M for the season. So it’s pieces from here forward.
If that's true then the FO has no intention of building a contending club for 2020.

I predict a lot of “shoulda just kept Cesar” posts next season.

the problem with this strategy (and similar ones suggested by many others) is the assumption that bohm is ever going to be up to the job of playing 3b defense at the major league level. all professional scouting reports i've ever seen express serious doubts about that. i'm hoping that updates based on the latter part of this season will provide more reason for optimism, but the reports from the 2019 afl provided by our own azrider were not encouraging, since in those even his defense at 1b was suspect. in 2020, bohm is all too likely to be about 5% above average as a mlb hitter, but poor enough at defense at 3b to be replacement level overall like vladjr in 2019 (according to fwar, though not bwar) or franco in 2018 (according to bwar, though not fwar), or perhaps achieve the same level of disappointment with better offense and worse defense than those two examples.
outside payroll issues, one thing gregorius has over donaldson and rendon is that getting him allows the option of choosing between trading one of gregorius/kingery/segura or trading hoskins, or keeping all of the above (and trading bohm?), depending on how bohm develops over the next year. or are donaldson and rendon more passable at 2b or ss than i think?

I know it's a SSS but I'm sure our crack analytics department thoroughly examined JT's 6 innings of work at 3B in the GCL and determined it a viable option.

Kingery 3B, Haseley/Quinn CF?
